Towing a Mini Cooper

I am towing a 2014 Countryman 6 speed using a Blue Ox plate. While installation was time consuming, all worked well first 2 trips. I leave the fob in and hit the start button once to put in aux mode. Third trip, the mileage was reflected on the trip meter (and I assume the odometer) and the doors auto-locked. (I had no spare with me. Lesson 1.) Obviously, it was in some other mode than straight aux. Any ideas what I did wrong?

You don't need the fob in the ignition with the Aux in the on position. Release the E-brake, set in neutral and lock the doors, that's it.
