Towing an Equinox

My equinox weighs 3450# . The GTW for my motorhome is listed at 3500. Should I look at other options or would it be safe to toe the equinox?

Is that 3450 loaded with gear and full of gas?

Personally, I try to keep the weight of whatever I am towing at 80% or less of the max tow weight of the tow vehicle.

Is your motorhome based on the Sprinter? There has been some discussion as to what the max tow capacity of the Sprinter is.

towing equinox

The motorhome is a 96 bounder with 454 and P30 chasis. Thinking about getting a breke-buddy?

At that weight, you will definitely need some kind of braking system to be legal.

I'm seeing tow capacities on some P30 chassis at 5k. What are your weight ratings?

GCWR
GVW
etc.

It is possible you could tow up to 5K with a different hitch? I would bet a lot depends on if you have a full frame where the hitch is attached.

I would recommend to look at some kind of surge braking system. I have the Brake Buddy (on second one) and never again. It works but it is in my opinion a pain to install every time. This is one time KISS does not apply.

I am the sort that puts magnetic lights on my tow and that is enough.

Wish I had a surge braking system.

I tow a Terrain now days.

Is your Equinox (1.5 gas FWD/ 1.6L diesel) and or AWD 1.6 diesel only vehicles can be towed. Shifts Transmission to neutral, ignition to accessory. turn off accessories. Run vehicle at the beginning of each day and at each fuel stop for 5 minutes. Check your owners manual.
This is out of the 2018 dingy towing guide.

Interesting, my 2014 Equinox with the 4cyl engine weighed just under 4000 lbs at a CAT Scale, it was empty but with a full tank of fuel. -Bill
