Whenever the tow operator towed a vehicle from the rear, they always used a strap to the steering wheel and slammed it shut in the door, to keep the wheels straight.
That was SOP. Don't know if it harmed the cars or not.

Yes this is what we did before locking steering wheels. I had a rope that I tied a knot about every 4 inches to keep it from slipping in the door jam and never damaged any.
