Towing street bike on the back of the toad with a motorcycle carrier?

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee as my TOAD and a Tuscany 40RT diesel pusher. I want to be able to take my street bike and my TOAD to the track for track days so I have transport so considering either a lift on the back of the RV and the TOAD towing behind that, but that is quite expensive and it means I cannot also take the bike on the back of the Jeep if I am not using the RV.

So has anyone had any experience with putting the bike onto the back of the Jeep with a motorcycle carrier and then towing that behind the RV? That would be cheaper than a full lift and more versatile. The Jeep can certainly handle it as it has a 6200 pound towing capacity so should easily handle my 430lb street bike on the back. But the question then becomes how will it tow behind the RV in that setup? It would add another 430lb to the TOAD, but I have the blue ox 10,000lb tow setup along with air force one braking system so the brakes on the TOAD should work fine. So I am more concerned with how the TOAD would flat tow behind the RV with that much weight on the rear end? Clearly it would drive just fine normally, but would it cause problems when flat towing?

If it will drive fine with the motorcycle hanging off back of Jeep then it will flat tow the same
*Flat tow just drags Jeep along so it would drag Jeep/Motorcycle combo along

The real question........can the Jee p drive just fine with motorcycle hanging off the back end
*430# plus weight of rack would be added weight to rear of Jeep suspension, tires/axle (sorta like Tongue weight of trailer)

There is a formula to calculate the amount of weight will be on the rear axle when you put a heavy object behind the rear axle. That 430# plus the carrier will transfer weight from the front onto the rear axle. I don't have the formula anymore, but I'm guessing you will transfer 250# off of the steer tires to the rear along with the carrier and your bike. Might add up to 7-800# to the rear axle. Not too sure how that would handle on the road. What is the "Dead Load" rating of the hitch on your GC? 350#????

The Jeep has a 6200lb tow capacity so it should handle around 600lb tonque weight so I believe it would be in spec?

The other option is to tow my exiting trailer behind the jeep but I don’t know if that is legal in the North Carolina area?

Checked and it looks like triple towing is not legal in NC and SC which is where I would mostly be towing. Ugh. Most of the surrounding states allow it!

Doing more research on hauling the bike on the back of the jeep and plenty of folks say they do it, but some folks say you are supposed to use a weight distribution hitch for any tongue weight higher than 400lb, but I cannot find anything on that except in the forums. Clearly my tongue weight would be north of 400lb (probably closer to 500lb) and a lot less than the rated max of 620lb, but there would not be a weight distribution hitch involved (not possible).

Trying to avoid the expense of a full motorcycle lift on the hitch of the RV.

Spoke to the folks at MotorTote and they have a calculator for bikes on the back of your car and should work fine. They actually have photos of street bikes on the back of Jeep Grand Cherokees so I got one and will see how it works for the next track day. I will let folks know how it goes in this thread.

If it does not handle that well (track is only 1 hour south) I might end up getting a hydra lift but that is a ton more money.

Only weighs 61lb so the bike and carrier is about 500lb.

You don't need the Hydra-lift for a motorhome. 15 years ago, I modified a Blue Ox carrier (much like the one you pictured) to carry a 950# Yamaha Venture Royal on the back of my MH. I welded a small receiver to each rear frame rail so I had three supports for the carrier. Then mounted a removable winch on one end. I balanced the bike while my wife winched it up a ramp into position and then I tied it down. I then towed a 4300# minivan behind. It worked just like it was supposed to for less than a quarter of what the Hydra-lift was then.

That rack should be just fine for shorter trips. Just keep an eye on the hitch attaching points on your Jeep.

If it was me, I'd be tempted to trade in the Jeep for a PU.

Are you physically capable and strong? (Or, do you have help?) I've been using those back-hitch ramps for years, and they're great, but loading a 430 lb bike can sometimes seem more like a controlled explosion than a nice easy drive up a ramp.

I would not. Track day says racer. A racer needs tools and a platform to take a bent/broken toy home. Have you considered a trailer? Of course, you have. The question of towing a trailer was in your post (do not double tow), but .... think about a bigger trailer that will carry the GC, bike and tools.

With research and planning, it is likely that you can make your proposed idea to four down tow the GC with a bike carrier work. However, it is borderline sketchy and without proper tuning can turn on you very quickly.

One of the negatives of four down towing is the potential of an overide during an emergency stop. So make sure you limit the weight shift off the front end and that means holding the bike carrier as close the the back of the GC. No fuel in the bike and no touring gear on the bike would help a bit. As a racer, you may already be doing that.

Transiting your travel route with caution is a must. Lower speed and longer following distances get you to the track safely.

I built this for the MH, but it could easily mount to your jeep.
Just use the hitch stabilizer clamps to prevent rocking.
