Towing Toad in New Mexico

Has anyone gone through the inspection / weight station in New Mexico on I-40 West bound.
I see they want tow bars to pull in to the weight station.
What are they looking for?

Is the signage to stop intended for MoHo’s? And if so, is it new?

We’ve driven that route in the past - and the signage typically only applied to commercial vehicle towing, not private MoHo’s.

If it applied to private MoHo’s, we at least weren’t chased down for running the stations.

New one on me as well, and we towed for years through NM (spent summers in Angel Fire).

Is this something new? Link?

I still think it’s Commercial only. Maybe it’s targeting the car towing trains that are heading to Mexico? They come to car auctions, pick up the ugly cars that don’t sell at the auction for cheap and towbar them together in twos and threes behind a beat up minivan or small pickup. I presume they go to Mexico to be fixed up cheaply and then sold for bigger profits.

You’ll see lots of these out west. I’ve seen “trains” of 8+ cars in 2 or 3 groups at truck stops on I-10.

I wouldn't bother. I was just through there from SoCal to Tulsa, OK and never saw any type of RV in a check station. Our group only had to stop coming back into California to check paperwork for the horses. Seems like AZ, NM, TX and OK don't feel any need to bother.

My past research says it refers to commercial trucks pulling 2 trailers.

I never stop at those they are only commercial and if you do pass one and they send a car after you, you run like heck.

We have never stopped or been asked to stop at a state weigh station with our MH towing a car or an enclosed trailer even though we were 73' long. Length limit is 65' in most states. We've traveled in most of the states west of the Mississippi. Below is some information on the subject, but in general we have found an RV to be exempt from some commercial requirements.

Had a similar experience in a state where the signs were not specific about commercial traffic only. Might have been NM. They just looked up in their window and waved us through.

I did a search through New Mexico codes and the only place I saw the terminology "tow bar" being used is a section pertaining to TOWING SERVICES (as in commercial towing services) when they mention "tow bar, cradle, sling attachment, under reach, or roll-back vehicle carrier."

TITLE 18 - CHAPTER 3 - PART 12:

TRANSPORTATION AND HIGHWAYS - MOTOR CARRIER GENERAL PROVISIONS - TOWING SERVICES

So I'm thinking that must be what they're looking for when they refer to tow bar? Again, as others have said, commercial vehicles and nothing to do with an RV I suspect.
