Weight Distribution

If you tow a trailer with your motorhome, I would be interested if you use a weight distributing hitch with bars or not?

My understanding of my owners manual states to tow a 15,000 lb trailer I must use the weight distribution hitch, but I have read many opinions that with an air ride you don't need the weight distributing hitch.

I have a call into American Coach and I have sent an email to Spartan.

I have used a weight distribution hitch on my '99 Eagle and my '09 Eagle, but I am curious what others are using that actually tow a trailer? I know about the Trailer Toad, but I am within my limits of the Chassis and the Trailer, so I am attempting to find others who have actual experience. Thanks.

Hello Johnny! as you know from my other posts and threads on this subject, I do not use a WDH. Through my research. a WDH is/was not designed to work with a air ride suspension system properly, and most Coach's don't need more weight on the front axle as most are maxed out. A WDS works properly on a leaf/coil spring suspension by design. My trailer has 1100# tongue weight, set it on the ball, and the suspension adjusts for the tongue weight and stays at its set ride height. Some hitch's state to use the full ability of the hitch(max weight), a WDS has to be used. My trailer pulls like a dream..........The Coach rides/drives better with it on the back. Will be interesting to read what others do/use.

I appreciate the update, I spoke with Spartan yesterday and they stated they do not advocate using a WDH on their chassis with air ride. I have been using one but I will be going without it on next trip. I incorrectly interpreted the owners manual but Spartan did tell me that they have had this go around with Fleetwood. I also contacted American Coach and they referred me to Spartan. Thanks again!
