What are you towing, and why

Until Thursday our toad was a 2014 Honda CR-V. We now need to purchase a replacement. Paul P kindly provided the link to the Roadmaster Towing Guide with links for multiple years.

We are going through and deleting heavier and more expensive vehicles. I hope to get it down to about 4 our 5.

To help, what is your toad and why? What are the hits and misses?

This is our third Jeep Wrangler to tow. They are among the easiest to hook up and set for towing, plus fun to drive though they are not for everyone. I did purposely stay away from the newer JLs because of the pushbutton start.

Is push button start a personal preference or a problem? One of the vehicles I'm considering is a 2018 Ford Edge, it has a push button start.

BTW, the car we purchase to tow will also be my every day car.

Not answering the question and guess I’m really old school but we still have an ‘03 Jeep Liberty Renegade. Light and drive train makes for easy setup. We could tow our Lincoln MKX but don’t want to do that. Hate to get rid of what works. Always looking tho!

Good luck!

We enjoy off-roading. We are towing our third Jeep. 92' YJ, 05' TJ Rubi, and now a 06' LJ Rubi. All modified for more difficult off-roading. They also make good scout vehicles for checking out boondocking locations for suitability of bringing in our motorhome.

If not into off-roading we'd likely have a Colorado/Canyon or Ford Ranger 4x4 pickup. Very multi purpose. Can carry people, groceries, and stuff. Plus do boondocking scouting and light trail sightseeing.

03 Ford Ranger because I need a pickup around the house and the other vehicles we own won't flat tow. We like to take the toad off into the back country a bit so whatever we tow has to be good for that and the Ranger works. 4x4 extended cab would be better in retrospect but not enough to go through the work of changing the brakes etc. If I didn't need a pickup would probably go with a Jeep Wrangler even though they handle like bricks. (traded my 95 Sahara for a 97 BMW Z3 - brick for a go cart!)

I originally bought the my 2018 Ford F-250 in 2018 to pull my then Jayco 5th wheel. In 2021, at the end of the year I traded in the 5th wheel for the Super C and needed a flat tow vehicle. Then it dawned on me why could I not pull the F-250. I did a lot of research and low and behold, it can be done. My Renagade Valencia pulls it fantastic, can't tell it's even back there. My tow set up is a Roadmaster Black hawk.

2019 Ford Ranger. It’s my everyday driver. Gets decent mileage in town and it has plenty of zip. Wanted a truck for light household loads and to tow our utility trailer. It’s pretty roomy for a small truck and is nicely optioned since we purchased the Lariat. Tows easy, but its close to the max rating on our hitch at a scaled weight (loaded for a trip with our bikes and stuff) at 4355 lbs, but we have plenty of overall cargo capacity.

It’s is easy to put in tow mode and doesn’t have the same towing limitations that our CRV had as far as maximum speed and towing time before going through the towing procedure again.

We also towed a Jeep Liberty for 8 yr. Wonderful vehicle and we had loads of fun off road. Never had any repair. Sold it well over 100,000 miles. Excellent daily driver. However, they're not made anymore.

If you think you'd enjoy off roading you might want to look into something that would do it.

We tow a 2017 Ford Edge Sport with push button start.
No big deal. Need to install a battery shutoff and a kit for the taillights plus your braking system.

You push the start button to put it in accessory mode, put the tranny in N.
Shut off the battery and go.

We tow it unlocked as the battery shutoff is under the hood but there are remote shutoffs that make that unnecessary.

Wish Ford didn't have these dumb driver door handles with no exposed key cylinder. You have to pop off a plastic piece to get to it.

The 2020+ Ford Escape Hybrid is also towable. Also look at the Chevy Equinox and Buick Encore GS and Envision(not the 2021 or later).

Sometimes we pull our '10 Ford Ranger 4X4 because we want a pickup.
Sometimes we take our '13 Elantra Coupe. Both are easy, no fuses to pull no speed limit or stopping to run the engine. Both just hook up and go.

A Jeep Wrangler TJ for all the same reasons as vsheetz, plus the dog likes it... Sand dunes, trails, scouting, sightseeing with a convertible option to boot.

We have been towing a 2015 Equinox. Why? Because it was the wife's car when we got into RVing and we were lucky that it was towable. Decent size, light and easy to tow.

Getting a GMC Sierra Crew Cab 4WD at the end of the month as the new toad. Why - because we want to travel with a golf cart in the pick-up and I could use a pick up around the house.
