1999 BMW 528 5-speed with custom towing setup. This is the car being towed home after the fabricating.

QUESTION: what's the purpose of those levers above the "Blue Ox" decal?

Those ( levelers ) are actually lock release mechanisms. While hooking up You can be at a angle and extend or retract each arm to pin into place . Drive forward and auto align for straight towing. When disengaging push release and it's free to stroke in or out to remove pins.

The Remco site will tell you what can be towed 4 down or modified to tow 4 down.
Thanks for this great webswite! Now, I have a question and please don't judge:
is there a tool or website to search for a 4 down toad vehicle that you can put specific parameters for the search? i.e. weight less 4K, approved to tow 4 down, year range, and/or price range, etc?

Journey Cat, we towed a '74 VW Standard Beetle behind our MH for about 9 years. The MH didn't even know it was behind us! We had a diesel puller MH (engine in the front) at first and then later we had a diesel pusher but both were only rated to tow 5,000 pounds. I check fuel mileage all the time and I can honestly say that the VW didn't make any difference in fuel mileage.

Standard Beetles are very easy to set up to tow. No baseplate is needed and the tow bar is only about $150. Just hook up the lights, put the transmission in neutral and unlock the steering wheel and you are ready to go. Our VW never gave us any trouble and we towed it to Michigan twice, Seattle once, Glacier National Park once, Maryland a few times, TN/NC many times, and DisneyWorld. The only reason we stopped towing it was when I retired and we started taking longer trips, my wife wanted something with air conditioning and an automatic transmission so that she could drive if she wanted to. Now we tow an '87 Ford Bronco II that has AT but the manual 4X4 transfer case and front locking hubs. It weighs about 3300 pounds and it is also very easy to tow.

VWs are a lot of fun and it was a real conversation piece at whatever campground we stopped at.

I towed a Camry with a tow Dolly. The Tow Dolly I used was a Demco Kar Kaddy SS. My MH is a Fleetwood Terra class A. The dolly towed well and I loved the stowing features when I was in the RV parks.
