when I was looking for a tow dolly, I looked at Master tow, Demco, and some others. I found a used Acme eze tow just north of Dallas, about 4 hours from me. 2014 model with an extra set of new tires and was much cheaper than a new one... All ready had a front wheel drive vehicle, so was set to go quickly... after 5000 miles on it last year, worked just right.....

Acme started adding tie wraps to keep the lenses from vibrating out. Eazy peazy.

Using Acme Tow Dolly with 2017 Ford Explorer?

We bought the Acme Tow Dolly with hydraulic disc brakes. We have set up the the Explorer to mount on the Dolly - no problem. My only concern is the unlocking of the steering wheel. Acme says that the wheels do not turn on the dolly, but the steering gear does. I am still trying to wrap my head around that. It is almost impossible to tell if the steering wheel is locked or not. I read a brochure on towing Explorer wheels down and the instructions say to run vehicle for five minutes, then with foot on brake, shift to drive then reverse then back into neutral. They also say to disconnect the negative battery cable. This is supposed to unlock the steering for wheels down towing. Has anyone hear towed an Explorer with the Acme Dolly? How do you assure that the steering will turn? Thanks for any information. LL

Acme Tow Dolly

Nice to see the over all comments on this Acme as I just bought and shipped one to western Canada. On arrival, I was impressed by the over all build and the ease of moving it around. The hand grip welded on the tongue is a no brainer, yet not often seen? Towing a Ford Escape and if I leave the key lock out, wheels turn without any issue. I really like keep it simple stupid so surge disks and the old flat wire plug are about my speed. Also had a hitch installed on the ford to tow the dolly.

Here is the photo that I was sent with the new lights. However, after some heat exposure and sunlight the tie wrap will fail. I now have doubled the tie wraps and use wider/heavier ones to hold mine in place. I place them at about the 1/3 & 2/3 positions on the width of the light. I also inspect them frequently because the sun takes its toll on them. Very easy inspection though. Have not had any issues since I did this.

Hmm. My brackets are on top of that plate just behind the fender. That's the way I found them. Wonder if that would make a difference. Actually had one of the brackets cracked in two pieces. Kept losing the rubber bushings also. Lots if head scratching on this one

Sounds like someone installed them upside down. Can you post a photo?

If this reply was for me, our Explorer is front wheel drive. I'm not sure we have figured out how to unlock the steering wheel. We plan to load the toad in an empty parking lot and go through the paces with the Acme. We need to assure that the steering wheel turns...

After a due and diligent search, I ended up with the new model Demco Kar Kaddy.

I passed on a different 6 month old used dolly in perfect condition 20 minutes away for $700 to drive 2 hours one way to get the Demco. Less than 2 years old, 3K miles and garage kept.
