Where to buy short term insurance for your toad?
We live out of the country and maintain an RV garaged in New Mexico we use for a month at a time 3 to 4 months per year. The toad is stored with the RV in a secure facility and it is immobile for 3-4 months at a time.
I'd like to find someone who will sell me liability insurance (its a cheap car) when I need it, not paying way too much money for 12 months when I only need three.
Has anyone found a supplier of this kind of insurance?
Thanks.

Our Auto Owners policy can be suspended as desired.

Mine will too. I have to turn the plates in at the DMV and get a receipt for them before the company will suspend the insurance though. In my state you can't have license plates on an uninsured vehicle. Too much hassle for me.
Besides the hassle I prefer to have insurance in effect if something happens to one of my vehicles while in storage. I don't drive my RV, pick up truck or my 1967 Firebird in the winter. They are stored safely away but are still protected by insurance.

OK, who is the company? The plates are South Dakota, they have no requirement about taking the plates off.

We use Allstate for our RV and toad. We carry liability only for both and turn the insurance on a week or so before we head out and turn it off again when we put them in storage. They sit in storage about 9 months a year.

I'd think as long as your state does not require you to file an “affidavit of non-use” to halt state-required auto coverage and allows insurance suspension, then it is what your carrier's policies are pertaining to liability suspension as it applies to an auto policy.
From what I understand, some insurers allow you to do it and some don't. We have friends who claim that they are allowed to suspend their coverage on a car they keep on their property but seldom drive. They have State Farm and said their agent has told them that they can contact the agency to suspend or reinstate their coverage on that car at any time ...according to them, as many times as they want. I have no first-hand knowledge if that is true or not as it sounds a bit odd to me.
Maybe call your agent and ask ...the agent or agency that you initially purchased your current policy with or who insures the motorhome itself?

My Hartford policy can suspend liability and collision, but requires comprehensive to be in effect. The Comprehensive is cheap enough and covers fire or theft, vandalism, etc.
My state (Florida) does not require any special action re the license plates while the liability is suspended. If SD doesn't care about the tags, couldn't you just cancel the policy and get a new one when the next travel season roll around?
