Why Bike Racks can't be on a toad
Hi,
Yesterday a 18 wheeler backed into my bike rack that was on my tow vehicle.
My bike needs repairs, the bike rack is finished, and I have damage to the car. Also he crushed it just enough for my coach hitch to go into my coach bumper.
So I need to get a new bike rack because we are no where close to home for the big repairs.
Why do some bike racks, like the Thule T2 916XTR for example say you can not put this rack on a towed vehicle.
thanks so much
moira

Would your toad not have been hit were it not for the bike?

The OP is asking why some bike racks like the one he quoted says it can't be mounted on a towed vehicle.

I take the OP's question is why does the rack manufactures say not to use in in conjunction with a toad.

Thank you everyone. Yes I am asking why manufacturers prohibit the use of their rack on a towed vehicle. Here is their quote,
"DO NOT install on a trailer or other towed vehicle"
I do not believe the driver saw the vehicle at all. He said he saw the coach but not my car. I think he was just not paying attention. It was broad daylight.

Lucky for you he hit the toad instead of the rig.

My Hollywood rack said this. I asked them when and they said there is a 'whipping' action created by the toad. The whipping is said to cause undue stresses on the rack. I disagree, but that is what they said. We talked engineering and if I eleminate the tilt feature and rigidly bolt it together, there is no issue,.

Perhaps because of the sway issue?

If you are using a tow dolly, your hitch is angled slightly down which puts the rack - and your bike tires - closer to the pavement. As you hit bumps, humps and low sections as you pull into driveways, you run the risk of bottoming out your bike rack, bending your rims, wearing your tires, etc. I speak from experience...

Thank you again.
I am not using a dolly. I tow four wheels down with a CRV 2004.
So if I buy one that does not tilt down, should I be ok?
On the 2004 CRV, the back door opens like a door, left to right. Not up and down. I put the car on a lift today to inspect the damage. The 2004 used a 4 bolt attachment to very thin metal. It is actually the underside of the spare tire well. It kinda buckled a bit and there are a couple of tears in it. The mechanic said it cannot be replaced. The back window doesn't pop up good anymore and the windshield wiper is messed up. My pedal is bent into the bike frame and the pedal probably tore the wheel cover.
So I wonder, now that it is weakened, I really need to pay attention to this. I am thinking of getting a swagman because the vertical bar lays down to the side. It does not lay back away from the car.
what do you think?

The hitch is not bolted to the frame in the CRV 2004

Been carrying bicycles on my toad with a receiver mounted bicycle carrier for years. Never had a problem. I've never seen any literature that says I shouldn't do it. Does you carrier manufacturer say this in WRITING? Or is it just a sales person pulling it out of somewhere? If it is WRITTEN, I would be interested in their reasoning either from an engineering or safety standpoint.
