Winnebago flat tow with surge brakes

Hi,

I have read that Winnebago does not recommend using surge brakes, and to check my manual.

My manual does not mention anything about surge brakes. Called Winnebago and the tech was not 100% sure.

Hitch has a 5000lb rating and will be towing a sub 3000lb toad in most flat Michigan.

Thanks,

I’ve read some reviews where surge brakes aren’t great on long downgrades, but can’t think of any other reason that Winnebago wouldn’t support them.

Never heard anything like that or think of a reason not to.

Aggressive brakes on the toad will put no push against the hitch. The toad will pull against the hitch, just like when taking off from a stop.

Having no brakes will put all of the push against the hitch, and many tow without brakes. The hitch has to handle all of the loads.

Surge brakes sense the push against the hitch and apply enough brakes to limit it.

Thanks both,

I had read it a while back, it was just something that stuck in the back of my mind.

I like the idea of the ready brute elite (mainly the cost).

I have been using the same Brake Buddy (surge type) for about 17 years and 180,000 miles 160,000 with Winnebagos. No worries!

Tow a flat trailer (3500#) with surge brakes all the time. No issue.
