Would you buy it?

I’ve been shopping for a 2014 Honda CR-V to use as a toad in the future. Have seen some with low mileage that is already set up for towing. Plates and wiring already there. Only thing is you don’t know how long or how far it’s been dragged behind a motor home. Most of these are for sale at a dealership so I’m thinking they may have been traded in for newer toad. Now the million dollar question. Would you buy one already setup?

Sure. Why not ? As long as it checks out with no wrecks, etc and you can track it's history and it meets your other criteria. You shouldn't have to pay any extra for the towing equipment.

We have a 2014 from new.
74000 miles not one repaired.
Just normal maintenance.
Brakes and fluid changes and tires. That's not counting about 8000 towed miles using a break buddy.
Great miles per gal. Cricket golf
Cart fits in back. [emoji16]

We have a 14 also and it has been a great toad. We have dragged it all over Canada and the U.S. No problems. 60,000 driven and 20,000 towed.

Sure why not, it would save you about $2,500 - $3,500 to convert for towing

Not only would I, I DID! 2013, 60K, unknown towed miles. Great shape, already set-up for towing including clear chip guard on all the front surfaces and a switch on the dash for shutting off accessories without pulling a fuse.

One thing to be aware of with the CRVs, is transmission shudder. It's a common issue. We test drove three of them and they all suffered from it to some extent or another. The one we bought does it sometimes.

You can check for it by driving down a backstreet lightly accelerating from a stop to about 20mph. Pay attention to how it shifts into second. It should be smooth, but if it has the issue, you'll feel a vibration that feels like you are driving over washboard. It isn't a problem with the transmission shifting but this is about the same speed the converter locks up. It can be subtle, or VERY obvious. On one we test drove I slightly let up on the gas and "held" the shudder until the sale guy in the back, eyes got big and he said: "Well, that isn't right!" Honda has a service bulletin on it which consists of changing the transmission fluid, and reflashing the transmission controller. Sometimes it works, and sometimes the fix is temporary. The proper fix is replacing the torque converter and Honda will NOT pay for it if the car is our of warranty. I usually stay away from extended warranties but this time we bought one. Replacing the converter runs around $1000. The dealer may cover the fluid change and reflash, or they may not. One quoted us $150.

You can google CRV transmission shudder.

Who know how many total miles are on a toad? There's no real way to estimate it without knowing the previous owner. Our 2014 CRV was bought used about 2 1/2 years ago with 11k miles on it. It was not set up as a toad when we bought it. It currently has 26,500 miles on the odo, so it has been driven 15,500 miles since we bought it. But, I track the towed miles and it has been towed just over 27,000 miles, almost equal towed/driven miles.

It has been a very good car. I expect it to last a long time.

Regards.

Chuck

HA! We did and didn't know it! December 2016, we started shopping for a late model 2014 or earlier CR-V to use as a towed car. We found a nice Certified Preowned 2014 at a local Honda dealer for a good price and 41k miles. Got a good deal and they gave us more that we expected for our bigger SUV for the trade-in. (Being the end of the month/quarter/year they were pushing to meet sales numbers new & used).

Couple of days later we were walking out of a restaurant and DW asked "what are those metal things sticking out from front of the car?". I didn't know but would look underneath when we got home and I could change into jeans.

Turns out they were/are the hook eyes for the safety cables of a Blue Ox baseplate. Upon further inspection of the car, I found auxiliary extra tail/brake lights had been carefully installed in the rear along with the connector in front and a little switch under the dash to shut off the circuit to the radio while towing (key is in AUX position).

All we had to buy was a tow bar and a Stay-N-Play braking controller.

Dealer didn't even know that the previous owner towed it.

Honda recommends doing the AT service annually if the car is towed. That's would I would want to know.

Properly maintained, Hondas are 300,000-mile cars. The man who installed the motorcycle lift on my DP had one in use at over 400,000. In most modern cars, maintenance is far more important than mileage.
