2016 Ford 5.4 liter Minnie Winnie

We have a 2016 ford Minnie Winnie 5.4 liter 22 R with 40,00 miles. We have an intermittent rattle heard on passenger side. Can be loud or soft, doesn't seem to be speed related. We have a brand new engine due to compression issues but the sound was present with the old engine as well. New catalytic converter and muffler. Heat shield appears tight. A number of mechanics have looked at it but no suggestions. Help!

Welcome. You will need to isolate when the rattle occurs, and what is going on when it happens? AC turns on? AC turns off? Fan speed? Any particular gear you are in? Accelerating, decelerating?

That's the frustrating part. Sometimes the rattle occurs when we pull out of the driveway, sometimes we can drive 15-20 miles before it starts but it usually occurs within 5 miles or so. A/C may be off or on, doesn't seem to make a difference. Speed doesn't seem to be a factor.

Is it a metal on metal sound? Plastic sound? How long does it last?

It doesnt sound like plastic, it is a loud rattle that may last a minute or less or extend on for 5-10 minutes. It seems less as the vehicle warms up but still occurs at any time. Rough roads dont seem to precipitate the noise. It seems to be right under the passenger floorboard near the vehicle doghouse. It doesnt occur when idling but does seem to be related to accleration, abates when just maintaining a steady speed. Thank you for your interest and suggestions.

Check your wheel covers...

Often the cosmetic wheel covers can become unseated and will rattle intermittently. We had this problem on our 24' C for a year or more, no rhyme or reason as to when we would hear the noise and isolating the location/source was next to impossible.

Had the tires rotated and the noise vanished as the tire shop had managed to properly tamp them home eliminating the rattle. Try taking off all of the covers and drive the coach over a variety of roads and don't be surprised if the rattle disappears... BTDT.

Gee I wish removing the hubcap covers would have worked. The rattle persists. Thank you for your suggestion.

Believe it or not...same issue?

I had the same issue, believe it or not it was the hinges on the side entry door. Put a little WD40 on the hinge pins. I did and the rattle went away.

If none of the above fixes worked, take it to a good tire shop and check the anti sway bar and the all the front end parts and alignment. I had an intermittent rumble/knocking and it turned out the sway bar was worn. Only did it when road was bumpy.

Thanks for the input. We have an appointment next week with alignment shop, hopefully will find the problem.
