Air Conditioner

We have another question. Sorry, we're newbies to RVing. I was talking to another new RV owner several weekends ago and he said he runs the generator while he's driving so that he can run the air conditioner for the RV while he's driving. Is that a safe, acceptable practice? I am asking because we will be taking a cross country trip soon with two people in the RV while we're driving.

That is safe, acceptable, and very common in hot weather.

+2 on running genny and roof AC. Well worth the fuel cost in the long run.

They're made to do that and it doesn't hurt a thing.

Just FYI, 2 things:

- the generator fuel inlet is about one-third of the way from the bottom of the fuel tank, so the genny will stop with about 1/3 of the tank remaining so you don't run your fuel tank dry with the genny while camping.

- while running, most generators seem to use about 1/2 gallon per hour.

Guess we're lucky... our cab AC keeps the front half of our coach reasonably cool without running the coach air. After a while it about freezes us outa the cab though. We've never felt to need to fire the genny up on the roll and will even just leave the engine idling with the cab air on when stopping for a quick lunch in the coach.

The one thing to watch is the fuel pick up for the generator is located at about 1/3 to 1/4 of the tank. If you run down to that level, the generator will sstarve for fuel and shut off.
