battery charging solenoid not closing
2018 forest river forester
When chassis engine is running 14.4 volts on one side of solenoid but no control power to close it so bus battery charging does not occur. I can find no documentation on the circuit so am unable to figure out where to start. Many thanks for any time spent trying to help!

First off, Welcome to iRV2!
What is the voltage of the house batteries at the time? You may need to search your documentation, but I know on some systems there is a controller so the solenoid does not close until the house batteries drop below a certain voltage.

Many use voltage sensing relays
It looks like the black box to the left is the controller, if the purple wire is going to it.
That box needs a ignition signal which may be fused.

The battery voltage was 12.7, so wouldn't that be nice if there were no problems. I have reviewed what little documentation is available and find no information on this controller. I don't think I was supposed to know about it...

Run down the house batteries to 12.2 vol/ and then start it up and see if it closes the solenoid.

If you have a box controlling the solenoid coil voltage wire (= CHARGE CONTROLLER), give us Brand/ Model and look up SPEC? Some may have programmed/ timed DELAYS on STARTUP (e.g. to allow 100% ALTERNATOR to chassis battery first) or other delay or high/ low voltage parameters affecting when/ if charging either direction. Both devices highly reliable, but CAN go bad, or have loose/ bad connections.

Wrap a small wire around one of the big studs to the purple wire. It will click , then check the big stud voltages , they should both be the same. Provided the other small stud is grounded. It could be grounded through a switch which is stupid but manufacturers do it for various reasons. Nothing but a fire hazard. So if it doesn’t click run a small wire to ground from the other small terminal.

Soooo…, when I went to do what you asked I found the bus door wouldn’t open but the handles worked fine. An hour later I had dismantled the door operator and found it broken. $300 later I moved on to your test and attempted to start the MAXXAIR fan but it said “not happening…”. An hour later I found the circuit board was kaput. $95 later I started your recommended test and after accidentally killing the batteries I found there was nothing wrong with the battery charging circuit from the engine.
Thanks for your help!!!
