Class C & GPS question
So, I didn't think about this when we purchased our Class C a couple of weeks ago - but when we got a radio replacement to have Satellite radio, the antenna had to go through the overhang. In order to have a GPS, we're going to have to find a way to do the same. What does anyone do? What GPS' works well for Class C's? Any recommendations?
Thanks!

We run 2 GPS units on our dash. The Garmin 770 picks up nicely but the older 478 has difficulty at times. I have moved it since this picture closer to the windshield and it now works great.
I've found it helpful to have both. Each does certain functions better than the other and it's nice to be able to look at alternate routes and waypoints and still have one on the main route.
This shows the overhange we have.

My Garmin Nuvi 550 works fine laying on the console between the seats, also works inside the house.

So our overhang is larger than the one posted above. Here is a pic of ours...wondering if the other folks have one this large and the GPS still works??

I have a long overhang in my MH and haven't had any problems with my Garmin mounted on the windshield. Actually I don't recall reading of anyone having issues in a class C with overhang.

The frequency band of the GPS signal is about the same as Satellite Radio and Wi-Fi.
When the Mfgrs say that their equipment needs a clear view of the sky, they do not necessarily mean an optical clear view. They usually mean a clear view at radio frequencies. NO Metallic interference.
I have a Class C with a bed overhang. The GPS, Sat Radio, and toll tag all work well on or above the dash. The Wi-Fi works virtually everywhere.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!! VERY helpful! We had a satellite radio installed and the guy who installed it mentioned that we might need GPS that has an antenna. Hadn't even thought about it and as was stated in one of the posts, doesn't seem like anyone has had issues. WHEW! Good news!

The overhang on RVs is largely fiberglass. Fiberglass is transparent to RF signals so you should really have no issues. The external satellite radio antenna on my Journey's roof failed. I replaced it with a Sirius antenna in the compartment above the driver's seat and it provides excellent reception. Good luck

Ours came with a Jensen radio with GPS, it works fine. In addition, when in a hurry my I Phone works perfectly too. I don't know what are your concerns.

I was just worried that the overhang would prevent a good signal from getting through, after the radio installer mentioned it. I'm all good with everyone's gracious replies! Thanks

My MH is actually an all metal boxtruck with a fairly large attic overhang. We're constantly loosing the signal on our windshield mounted Garmin GPS which never happens when the GPS is used in one of our cars. Cell phone signals do the same. So far it hasn't been much more than a minor annoyance.

Have Rand McNally (Garmin) GPS in rig like yours. Only problem is when I fire it up parked next to my house. It picks up signal a few miles down the road and is never an issue while driving. Windshield mount.
