We have very sturdy, very wide oak stairs/ladder up to the cabover. It is very cozy up there. However, even the children have to be careful, especially when transitioning from the bunk to the ladder. I would not put an older person up there.

The pool noodle is your best bet. I used on mine and now it's not so hard on the feet. Easy to put on as well.

The question is not whether it can be done. The question is whether it should be done. I think the chances of a fall are too much. Many of the older friends that have gone with the Lord, began their significant health issues with a fall doing something they assume it was ok. With you well if you want to do it. Just a thought.
