Class C Spare Tire Dilemma

Hello, Happy Campers!

I own a ‘18 Thor Freedom Elite Class C coach(26HE) single bed slide on driver’s side.

As you are probably aware, new coaches don’t come with spare tires any more or jacks or tire changing tools.

So, I negotiated a full size spare in the purchase of my coach. However, there is no way to mount it to the coach.

They gave me a bumper mounted spare tire holder which I refuse to install.

There is room under the coach aft of the rear axle if I do some minor modification to the black water drain line to make space for it.

Plus, I’ll need a hanger and some custom welding work to mount it there.

So, I’m fishing for suggestions, tips, tricks, shortcuts, hacks and ideas and photos if you have them.

Got any? Please let me know. Right now it’s inside the coach on the floor - unsatisfactory!

Thanks, Ahead of Time,

Scott

We have 2000 Tioga 24D .

The spare is mounted to the back wall , centered horizontally side to side and centered vertically between the back window and rear bumper.

See attached photo . Zoom in for better view.

Works great , no load on rear bumper , mounts tight to wall so isn't in the way of bike rack or toad.

If your coach rides on 16" wheels then the spare tire winch and drive extension ( may require lengthening) off a early 2000s Dodge dually one ton.

A trip through an auto salvage yard should turn one up .

I used one under my last 5er ; I'll see if I can dig up a picture .

I bought a winch and a jack from an F-350 and welded in a couple of pieces of channel iron across the frame and mounted the winch under the back. I poked a neat hole out the back just above the bumper. I used a piece of metal conduit out the hole to the winch. Just use the original handle to put the tire up and down. Looks like it belongs there, you can’t see it, it won’t get stolen and it’s in unused space underneath. I can take some pictures if that would help...

Our 06 Winnebago Outlook came with the spare tire mounted under the rear of the coach. Winnebago made a rectangular steel frame that is hinged on one side and held up by a large bolt and wing nut on the other (passenger side). The tire and wheel are also bolted to the framework. The tire and framework fit between the Ford frame rails and are not visible until crawling under the coach. Not easy to get out but we do have a spare tire and wheel. I would still have to call roadside assistance, we have the spare but no tools or jack to change it.

Have a machine shop make you a custom receiver where the spare tire sits on the receiver. That's what I did. I carry an unmounted spare.

I bought the Roadmaster Spare Tire hanger. It slides into the receiver and yet still allows for a hitch setup for a toad or whatever. It was pretty pricey, around $400 but it was the best solution I found that didn’t require modifications to the RV. It has a lever that makes lowering the tire and wheel to the ground much easier.

I have seen a spare tire mount on the web, not my cup of tea. I needed to move my spare off the rear wall, where the OE truck spare mounted was occupied with RV thingys. I welded up a bracket and mounted spare between the frame rails. PIA to remove and replace, but have not used a spare in years and have road service, so some youngster can deal with it
