Hi, I’m having trouble charging my house batteries with a solar charger, the cable get so heavily caked with battery acid that the cables fell apart. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First question, what is the wattage of your system and which solar charge controller are you using?

Second question, where are the solar charging wires connected to the batteries, meaning, which specific terminals on which specific batteries in the bank?

Obviously, you have wet cell batteries and the off-gassing seems to be causing the problem. Over charging or too rapid charging is often the cause of excessive off-gassing, but we don't know any details of how you are charging them, how long they have been connected to the solar charger, or whether or not they have been charged, periodically, by shore power, generator, or alternator. All of these things contribute to corrosion around the terminals, but we can't tell if it is normal or extreme without more information.

In the meantime, remove all the battery cables after carefully marking them for reattachment (or take a "before" photo.) Clean up all the battery tops and terminals. Use a wire brush to get the terminals clean/shiny. Remove any residue from the tops of the batteries and around the terminals and cable lugs. Use baking soda solution to neutralize any acid, and rinse carefully with clean water. Now, you are ready to reconnect your batteries together.

Before you reconnect the solar charging cables (new ones), let us know the answers and information asked. That will guide advice as to cause and solution to your situation.

BTW, a photo of your corroded cables and the battery bank will be worth a thousand words.
