Door lock upgrade on a 1985 Minnie Winnie

I'm not finding any lock upgrades for older minnie winnies, I'm not sure if there is a common name for my lock or not.

Now to my current newbie question - I am wondering if there is an upgrade door latch for the large older style locks, or if I should stick with OEM. I'm not sure if I would be wasting $42 on a replacment inside handle and latch to later just replace it with something better, or if these were the best in the biz or something.

The latch = Winebago Industries part 039979-01-000 is stamped on the back
Here is an Amazon replacement shipped from Winnebago -

I was also thinking about adding some filler in the latch area, I have starboard from scrap left over boat repairs. Then sandwich it all in nice 316 stainless sheeting. I got some sheets from the remants area at my local Alro metal to do the back splash and have enough. Then add something like a $25 fastec lock since they seem to be working well on a ton of RVs

Here are some pics kind of like my plate idea, but I was thinking bigger nice polished looking plates, maybe glue the edges of the plate with 3m 5200 instead of screws in the corners and let the new latch hold them on.

update: saw this option and thought if I added a dead bolt this is a pretty bomber proof looking basic option

Now pulling a 36' 5er. Previous - 1986 Minnie Winnie WC420RG with Chevy 30, new to me at 4000 miles, with Noric Cold LP/ electric fridge, Onan 2800 Gen, Dometic AC, and Suburban Furnace.
