E450 Radio power - Coach vs Chassis
We just got a 2021 Thor Quantum on the E450 chassis.
The radio/infotainment screen does not work unless coach power is turned on.
Is that normal? Is there possibly a switch somewhere to change how it works? I can see wanting to be able to use the audio system off coach power when you're stopped but it seems very odd to have to turn on coach power for hours and hours as you're driving in order to use the side view and backup cameras.

By coach power I'm ASSuming that you are talking the 12 volt side of things. I, and pretty much everyone else, pretty much do not shut off the coach power except for mid and long term storage.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ X2 ^^^^^^^^^^^^
FWIW: My WBGO manual says to leave the 12v coach power on anytime the coach is occupied. Dunno why for sure ...... maybe so the propane leak detector is "ON" ?

If your radio/infotainment screen is in the dash cockpit of the Ford E450, it’s probably powered by the engine battery under the hood.
Isn’t there another system somewhere else within the actual house?
My in dash system works as any normal vehicle from the battery under the hood.
My house system is completely separate running off the house batteries.

That's not accurate. Mine is in the dash of the E450 but it's controlled by the house Store/Use switch. As others have mentioned, I've never driven the RV with the store/use switch in store position.

You should only turn off the main DC power when you are storing the coach somewhere without the advantage of shore power or solar. Our in dash radio always works driving or in a campsite but we never turn off the main disconnect. Just so you know, Ford does not install the dash radio on the Quantum, Thor does.

Thanks for the responses. Now that I know how it works I will just deal with it.

We do have a 100w solar panel - is that likely enough to run whatever base systems/phantom power drains? It's parked in an area that gets full sun most of the time from spring to fall.

You want the " USE " switch on while plugged in to shore also.
If not on, the house batteries are not being charged. If they are not being charged then the chassis batteries won't be charged and if you stay a month or more at a campground , you'll have dead batteries.

Not familiar with a "USE" switch, but our RV does have an emergency toggle that connects coach power to the chassis in the event the chassis battery goes dead.
But I can't imagine staying in one place for a month - we are more of a night or two up to maybe a week before moving on. At least, before RV. Can't imagine it changing.

Depends on what the phantom power drain is. You will have to do some testing.

Ok, thanks. What is a "good" battery voltage? I can check it most days - it's parked at my business and I'm there 5-6 days a week.

They keep changing the names of battery disconnect switchs. What I'm call Use/Store seems now being called Coach Power.

This chart shows state of charge for a lead acid battery.
