Engine revving louder

Hi we were driving home from a camping trip, and when going up hills the engine naturally drops into a lower gear, but all of a sudden the reving became louder. The performance was the same the only thing different was the sound. I turned to my wife and she agreed that it was louder. I have an ford e 450 v10. Is this something I should take it in and have it looked at or does anyone know what might be the cause. Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

You sure it was your engine and not your fan kicking in?

Cracked exhaust manifold. Burned manifold. Blown manifold gasket. Blown exhaust donut. Hole in Cat. Hole in muffler Ruptured seam in muffler. Exhaust pipe hanger bracket torn loose from pipe. Engine air filter cover or delivery tube compromised in some fashion.

Sometimes the coolant tempeture climbs higher then normal and that causes the fan behind the radatior to go into a faster mode, causing quite the roar.
If things went back to normal once over the hill, it's probably normal.

If it roars all of the time, the fan clutch may have seized. Engine off, see if you can turn the fan with some resistance. If not, get it fixed.

I have the e450 super duty v10. Mine does increase in noise on hills when automatically changing gears. If you have the tow haul feature it will reduce it. Just turn it on when you travel hilly areas. You may want to try that after you check engine for any mechanical errors.

Good question..... did it continue to be "louder" or did it go back to normal? Any check engine lights? A lil more information may help us point you in the right direction.


Unlikely, but older V10s were prone to blowing spark plugs. I had it happen to me in a 99 F250, but it was extremely obvious and doubtful this is your case.

I always use it when going up hills, even when I press it and not going up a hill the noise is louder than usual

It did continue to be louder even the next day when I drove it to storage, I am going to check the few things mentioned in this thread, but am open to any other suggestions, thank you

Describe the noise. Fan clutch would be my first guess. But fan noise is distinctly different than exhaust noise, or intake noise. Make sure the air cleaner assembly/piping is connected properly or the filter hasn’t collapsed because it was clogged.

Many possibilities, and they do need to be INSPECTED/ EVALUATED; EXHAUST BLOWING THE WRONG WAY can melt things/ start fires, so manifold/ bolts, header to pipe gasket/ joint, or blown catalytic, pipe or muffler. Pipe after muffler is just a tailpipe, but leaks can still be fire/ damage risk. Good Luck

It is your radiator fan clutch kicking in, nothing else.
