Ford Triton V10

We purchased a 1998 Itasca Class C. My boyfriend was really happy with this engine but the gas mileage sucks! 6 to 7 miles to the gal! We’ve both had numerous RVs in the past and never had this problem. I was hoping for 10 mpg.
Anyone out there have the same problem and came up with a remedy?

Given your rig is 23 years old, what if any engine servicing has been done?
When was the last tuneup? Spark plugs? Filters?
Tire pressures being monitored?
You probably have only a few engine gears (4?) compared to today’s 5, 6 or more speed transmissions.
Then…..how heavy footed is the driver? Any RV is basically as aerodynamic as a brick. Gentle acceleration, deceleration, and how much equipment are you carrying? Just because there’s space, doesn’t mean you need to fill it.

No one should buy an RV hoping to be the most fuel economical vehicle on the road. Honestly….how many miles to the gallon does a house get?
Just sayin’.

Give it a tune up,, as said tire pressure etc. load, size, etc

watch on older RV the cats will clog and kill MPG..

A few people see 8-9 and on ocassion 1 more.. BUT..

You did not mention the size... I traveled with a guy with a 31 foot minnie winnie 2002 V10.. 5.5 - 7.5 depending where we went, my old 94 23 foot 460, was a solid 7-7.5 with occasional 8-9 on long level runs..
I have a 96 Minnie 30ft, 460, I tweeked exhaust, timing, air intake, thermostat etc etc.. If I pamper it on level high way stay around 65 not past 70 I have seen 9.5+ for a but.. BUT 7.5-8 is best ever all around nad it will hammer 6.5 on hilly mountain hauls...

We had a 2005 class c with a 4 speed trans. in the past and averaged around 7 MPG. We now have a 2016 class c with a 5 speed trans. and average around 8 MPG so I think your MPG seems about right.

I've been told the new V8 in the class c's averages around 9 to 10 MPG

We had a 1999 31 foot class C and the best we could get was 8 to 8.5 mpg driving at 65 mph. If we went faster, the mileage went down.

You did not say how fast your BF drove, I will bet it is 70 or 75 MPH, so he is doing OK. As noted, get the engine service, fluids and filters.

Slow down. I drive 55-60 and have gotten a min of 8 mpg on all 3 of my V-10s. My new Minnie gets 10.

^^^^ X2 on the 6-8. ^^^^ Just a tiny tailwind helps the boost the 8 a little on occasion but I see a LOT of 7.3 to 7.6.

You're pushing a fiberglass box into the wind at 55+ mph. Fuel economy is normal.

These things are not good for MPG. I have never got anything close to 10.

No one buys a RV for it's fuel mileage.

I had a 2000 HR drove to Mexico every year towing something. 6.8 was normal. Didn’t matter if I took the mountain rout through Durango or the flat rout down the west cost. 6.5-6.8 is all your gonna get. People claiming 10 are on a 40 mile stretch going downhill, or fibbing a bit.

I have a friend who has a 2006 Georgie Boy, same chassis and spent $500 on the tuner and a bunch more on other stuff trying to get better mileage. 6.8 - 7 was the best he could get we figured I was about $500 ahead by just driving it.

We had a 99 Tioga 24d E350 V10 with the 4 speed auto. If we drove 60mph with the a/c off on level ground 10mpg was possible. But with the dash a/c on and driving 70-75, we got 7.5.

Change the air filter often, a 6.8L sucks a lot of air. New spark plugs and at minimum the coil rubber boots should be changed. The fuel filter should also be changed every 15-20k miles. Lots of fuel passes thru it at 7.5mpg. Fuel filter is on the frame a few feet behind the drivers seat. My 2018 E450 does not have a replaceable fuel filter, it’s in the tank.

Have the alignment checked just to be sure it’s not causing any unnecessary drag.
That’s all I got.
