Fords F450, V10 in all models?
we are looking to buy a Class C motorhome in the next couple years. YES! we are researching now. But I have a question about the V10?
It seems every class C has a Ford V10 regardless of size. Everything from a 22' to a '31 foot motorhome has the same engine.
This probably naive of me, but it seems to me if you have a larger motorhome, wouldn't you want a bigger/larger engine. Or maybe use a diesel engine in the 27' and upsize motorhome?

They don't offer an oil burner in the Ford Chassis. For the cut down chassis, that is just not used for RVs. That's why they are V10s.

You will also find many Ford powered Class C motorhomes with a V8. That V 10 engine is also used in Ford powered Class A MHs that are 37-38 ' or so, although the Class As have 3 valve engines ,unlike the 2 valve Class C MHs, since the 3 valve won't fit in the E series. That's the same reason newer ( since the 6.0 I believe) diesel engines aren't used in the Class C - they don't fit.

Driving a E-450 V-10 32’ Class C flat towing a Honda C-RV. We have plenty of power & climb the most highway grades at reasonable speed. Rig handles great & the Big Rigs blowing by have no effect on our rig! Not to worry the V-10 does just fine! Take a test drive at a dealership...they will love to let you!

I had a first generation, V10@245 HP, in a 30 ft Class C.
Loaded for 6 months of full tuning and a car in tow, it had enough power to go everywhere I asked it to. On some big hillls, it was turning 4500 RPMs and only doing 45 mph, but it handled it.
They have come a long way since 1999 and the new V10 will handle a 36 ft motor home.
Besides, at this point, no mainstream manufacture is making a bigger gas engine. There is some chatter about a big V8 but not for a year or two.

Isata Dynamax builds super Cs on the Dodge 550 chassis with the Cumnins. Thor builds super Cs on the Ford 550 chassis with the diesel.

A different rear end gear ratio is used for each different size/weight of the motorhome. Thus a 16,000 lb F53 motorhome chassis will have a different rear end gear ratio than a 26,000 lb F53 chassis. Same engine just a different amount of power supplied to the wheels. It's possible that they do the same thing for the E-450 chassis, I'd have to do some digging into the specs to confirm that.

The ford v10 has been around since1997. It's been upgraded a couple of times. Its tried and proven, very stout engine, yah it revs on hills. It's used today in the f650 vocational truck and also f650 uhaul rental fleets. It's a workhorse I have seen v10's in a class c with 200,000 miles and still no oil burning.

Look at it this way, the V10 is the biggest gas engine Ford makes. It can be found all the way up to nearly 40' RV's. When you have a 22' class C with one you have power to spare, if there really is such a thing. At the lower end the E450 also comes with a less powerful V8.

So I went to an RV show here in Rochester and was talking to a salesman and he was trying to explain how the V-10 can be in so many different units? From the F450 class *C* to a 40' Class *A*
Can some explain the difference between the 2-valve and three valve v-10? And what the gear ratio would do to help with going uphill
I don't get it, why would one valve make more power than the other.

Two intake valves per cylinder. More fuel/air into combustion chamber equals more power.
I doubt you get a choice on diff ratios.
With the 6 speed tranny, you will be ok on hills

The 3v vs 2v v10.. 3v will suck more air vs the 2v, install 5 star tune on a 2v and you will have almost the same hp/torque curve as the 3v, we have a class c 31ft loaded to max gcwr, and it does fine with 5 star, we didn't buy a RV to go fast,we enjoy the ride, you dont get a choice of axle ratios, ford builds them one way based on gvw, nobody makes a diesel in a class c mini c yes, sprinter and ford, then it's super c on ford f650 or dodge ram. Dont worry the v10 is a very capable engine, it's been around for 20 some years in 3 different hp ratings. Ease of maintenance is a solid plus after owning 2 DP with Cummins ISC"S with air brakes.love our class c Fleetwood 31ft. We tow a 3100lb tow with no issues, never overheated in 110f temps.
