Fridge operation during ferry transport

How long can a fridge typically stay cold during an extended ferry ride? (i.e the 15 hrs to Newfoundland from Sydney). I know the propane will be shut off during transit and ours is only a 2 way fridge so won't be able to rely on 12V power for anything.

May want to throw a couple of large ice blocks in for that sailing.

A closed refrigerator (/freezer) will not warm up very rapidly. If the refrigerator door is not opened, I would expect no more than 3 degrees of warming inside it during that time. The more tightly packed the refrigerator, the more it will retain its cold temperature. Just shut it off and keep it closed. Your food will do just fine.

Agreed. Might want to freeze some larger plastic juice bottles ahead of time to place in the fridge/freezer. Just extra insurance.
When we have had to turn off our fridge/freezer for extended time, we also made sure it didn't contain anything we would hate to lose, or would make a mess if it thawed. You never know when your outage may be extended by unforeseen circumstances.

My plan is to use my inverter/battery for the 120VAC option. We have ferries all over here but the crossing times are short, so in my case it may be mute. Inquiring minds want to know so I am running a test. Had the door open and fanned some warm air in to get the thing to start a cooling cycle. I'll check later to see how much 12V I'm using.

I have no idea how long mine would stay cold, that will be another test.

I would sure check for some DRY ICE.

Small piece wrapped in a couple of layers of newspaper in the refrigerator. Small piece with a single layer of newspaper in the freezer.

That is exactly what we do on the boat as well to substantially reduce electrical draw from the refrigerator when heading offshore.

Dry ice evaporates (carbon dioxide) so no mess to clean up. Carbon dioxide is not poisonous and dissipates quickly when you do open the refrigerator.

Dry ice would be ideal, but may be tough to find.

My non scientific test has my refrigerator at about 16A per hour for a 10 hour test. So my math would be 240Ah capacity for a 15 hour trip, 384Ah per day.

My comverter will throw 60A to the battery and take 4 hours to recover from my crossing.

Be careful with dry ice, it could turn the sealed freezer compartment into a bomb, not so much with the refrigerator section as it has the drain line for the drip tray which would release the pressure.

Use frozen plastic oce, or milk jugs, or plastic jars to extend cool time, should be fine unless menu extravagant?

It's interesting that folks think a refrigerator begins to warm the second the plug is pulled but you can usually go three days on a couple bags of ice in a cheap cooler. Rather than wonder about it, load it up with a cross section of items like vegetables, fruits, drinks, maybe some ice cream and frozen meat from the home fridge and pull the plug as a test run while you're home. Put a wireless indoor outdoor thermometer inside so you can watch temperatures without opening the doors. The idea of block ice or dry ice would ensure success, but I would bet you'd be OK without it provided it started at operating temp.

Mark, my take is 6-8 hours without power, ok for an RV refrigerator, but 15 is pushing it particularly as even after power /propane is restored it will take another number of hours to pull the temperature back down. Ambient temperature matters too, it is one thing to have a refrigerator without power when it is 50F outside, it is another when it is 100F.
