I suppose a lock might deter someone from stealing the front cover of the generator. If, like ours, the generator compartment is open at the bottom and the cover is not firmly latched in place, it could fall out. Hence the motive for someone trying to steal yours.
I've heard they are pricey to replace.

This is true, but some don't think it will happen to them, so why need it!

I have been taught that the best and safest way to fight an engine (and by extrapolation a generator or propane tank) fire is to insert the fire extinguisher nozzle up under the engine and spray from below. Opening the hood, engine access doors or any compartment sealing off the source of the fire can cause a major flare up when all that oxygen is rapidly introduced. I have seen it happen myself.

Hard enough changing the oil, let alone stealing it. Unnecessary.

My generator is behind a locked compartment door. I can understand having it unlocked when running (must admit I never have) but am glad it can be locked. Not so much worried about theft as it would be very difficult but it can be started from a switch on the front of the generator. Unless I installed a lockout switch, someone could walk right up to it and start it.

Or, if you were to forget to shut it down after 10:00 PM, someone could walk up and shut it off for you.
I wouldn't do that, of course.[emoji56]
