Want better mileage from a vehicle designed like a cinder block?
Slow down to the engines sweet spot (rpm) usually about 60mph on the older rigs commonly equipped with 4:56 gears and no overdrive.
What's the hurry?

Older 460 rig, water inject is a 70's gig.. blah blah..
Back to 460.. I have built them in many configurations. Motorhead back in the day..
1985ish.. basic low compression carbed workhorse..
Redo the carb if it is still good,, bump timing 2 - 4 degrees advance.. You can sort of desmog.. it is a toss up..
Next easiest is Exhaust.. either headers, that will add some extra pull and maybe 1 -2 mpg.. I have just after the y pipe, went with a 3" or 3.5" straight back with hi flow muffler, mid quiet style and dumped it out in front of the dual wheels. Less bends and shorter, flows best..
You can opt for a better intake and add a edelbrock intake and their or holleys sniper TB fueil injection with feed back system.. THESE WORK well, I have done a couple in the early version and I hear they are better now..
I had a 429 (baby 460) in a 26000 lb flat bed get 12-14mpg all day on the highway loaded to avg 21-24k gross.. But it was purpose built needed good fuel .. That build would be 15K plus today..
OH you can try a slightly taller tire,, if it has 225/75/16 try a 215/xx/16 or so, they are inch pluss taller and will drop a few RPM on highway
Still a large cube of dead air going down the road,,
I have done basics ( exhaust, timing, thermostat, tweeks) on my 1996 460..30 ft C lives in the 7mpg range at 70mph.. If I can keep it 60 and stay awake and avoid getting blown of the road.. I have seem 8-9 mpg..
Dont get better than that ..

Agree with sibe, the best performance gain on a 460 is exhaust headers and a decent dual plane intake manifold. Had an old F250 4x4 with those improvements and it got 10mpg all day long with a 9' camper and 21' heavy deep v boat.
Again, at 55-60 mph. At 70 more like 7-8 mpg.
Now, ask me why Ford thought a 22 gallon fuel tank was ok with a 460?

I did years ago on my parents Brougum(sp) using a plan from Mother Earth News in 1980. It was a carburetor on a big block. Mixed water and isopropyl alcohol in a jar then a fish tank aspirator on a tube, then hooked to a vacuum input on the carb. I drove that motorhome from Houston to Oxnard, getting about 8 mpg. Installed the water alcohol system and drove it back, getting 10 mpg. Haven’t used one since.

If you want better MPG with a older carb big block than check out Holly TBI fuel inject system, it replaces that old carb and also prevents vapor lock that happens with older carb autos and such because of the newer fuels.
The Holly TBI comes in 2-barrel and 4-barrel, 2-barrel will give you better mpg.
