I have some orange plastic blocks and I have some yellow plastic blocks ... each type adds about a vertical inch per block. I’ve used as many as six and that leaves me nervous. YMMV

Shouldn't the blocks be UNDER the front wheels?

I have used a lot more than that. I carry 3 dozen of orange tiles and some 2 by 8 lumber. Occasionally I use then all.

I used 5 blocks under each front jack last week. Each block is 1.5 inches.

As I understand the tires need to be on the blocks not the jacks. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

You are correct. If you have 5 blocks under the front tires you may want a couple under the jacks so you don't over extend them, but tires are always first.

While I do try to avoid it if possible, I have had the wheels off the ground a few times. But whoa,, plastic blocks under the jacks to put that heavy rig that high up wouldn't cut it for me. Not that the rig would go very far, just that something could be damaged if anything did give way. The bigger thing for me is using that little step stool with so much distance between it and the bottom of the steps. Yep, I can see myself forgetting and killing myself.

To answer the OP's question,, 4 of the plastic blocks under the tires would be as much as I would ever want to go. I could however, handle a little more height with good solid wooden blocks.

I built small boxes from 2 inch lumber so one "block" is 5 inches high. The higher the stack, the bigger the blocks need to be. Tall narrow stacks have a tendency to tip over.

They are solid blocks, this is what they are designed for.

I use blocks of 2x12 that I sandwiched between 1/2" plastic cutting board material. I always block under the jacks 1st if the site isn't level. I level, and then if the tires are off the ground, I block under them with the same kind of blocks.

This is what I do. The beauty of this method is, when you see your tires off the ground, you can raise with the jacks a little more, then place blocks under the tires, and then lower onto them.
