Smile ONAN 2500 LP Choke Adjustment

Hello,

I would like to adjust the choke on the ONAN 2500 LP. 2.5KF26120K. I tested the other component but as soon as I muffle the front air intake grill/vent it starts. W/O that it chugs. Any expert out there have the procedure in their head to guide me? I'm use to working on LP generators but I've worked on plenty of other vehicles over many years. just need some quick guidance? Service Manual? I'm new to the forum. Cheers to all.

There is a "Altitude Adjustment" on the Onan. It should match your present altitude. It looks like this. Maybe you will get lucky and find this to be your problem.

Since it’s propane it shouldn’t need a choke to start. Check the propane regulator vent tube for bugs. They seem to like building nests at the end of the tube and will do exactly what you described.

Agreed, I've never seen a propane powered anything utilize a choke.
You have a fuel delivery issue of some sort.

ONAA 2500 LP Choke

Thank you all so very much. It is very kind to answer the message. I'm quite sure this question in some form has been asked prior. But to get an update response is, well, thoughtful. Cheers and I think I got this solved!

To those who say that a propane genny doesn't have or need a choke, sorry, the Onan units do and it has to work properly to get started.

You need to see my video on a hard to start 2500LP I have. Easy fix. There is no choke adjustment, but the spring that pulls the choke butterfly closed is weak. Mine would reluctantly start at the house 800 ft elevation, but at 5000 ft elevation, there was nothing doing. It starts first time, every time now. 5 min fix.

Charles,

That is an "Excellent" video for people with a 2500 LP Onan generator!

Thank You! I have been thru all of your photo album and read many of your posts, especially if they relate to Ford E series handling and fixes.

Contrary to popular belief, we do have mountains in the east. I might never have bothered to "fix" the generator if it were not that we had gone to a no hookups campground at 5000+ ft just off the Blue Ridge Parkway a little bit north of Cherokee NC. Crawling under it to get it started caused me to dig into it. Same thing happened recently with the water heater, which has always required two to four attempts to start (on LP) and a trip about three weeks ago, again on the BRP, at about 3200 ft required 7 attempts to start the water heater. I replaced the igniter/flame sensor for about $30 and it started right up and KEPT BURNING, which it has never done. Time for another trip to the mountains to test it there.

I RECALL a post where owner said he replaced his LP REGULATOR, after finding only 9"w.c. vs 11"wc required; said that cured all and refrig now works better than it did new
