Preferences on hooking up surround sound and TV

Many have read I am converting an older Dynamax with current "stuff." One of the things I'm doing is Dish satellite, surround sound and TV with a DVD player on the side. So here's my question......How does everyone like to hook up the system?

Option 1: Dish box and DVD into surround sound then from surround sound to TV via HDMI. That means the surround sound is on in order to watch TV from either DVD or satellite.

Option 2: Dish box to TV then digital optical out from TV to surround sound. DVD player to surround sound then to TV so surround sound is on for DVD watching.

Do you tech folks have any preferences??

I run the surround sound any time the TV is on regardless of input.

I prefer to run the incoming signals direct to TV .Then connect sound bar , surround sound , DVD and cordless headphones to TV.

In an attempt to keep things simple , such as reducing number of remotes and having to turn devices on and off , like when watching news I don't need surround sound . We also use cordless headphones for when one of wants quiet or is sleeping .

This works for us .
