Recommend Scooter

I want to get a scooter that would go on a hitch mounted lift. We don't want to tow a car, just need something to make short runs to the store.

Lots of scooter options, most likely get one in the 50cc range. It needs to take my wife and me about 300lbs.

What do you have what are the issues?

Hello Doug

I don't carry a scoot but I have a 180cc and my wife has 100 cc, both Kymco's. She used to have a 50cc and it was real small feeling. Even her 100 feels really small; it can carry us but I feel like a big bear on a trike; our combined weight is about the same as yours. The 100cc weighs about 105 Lbs. ; the Honda 125 weighs about 215 Lbs and I would think be safer, more comfortable and better match for a carry scoot. Good luck and have fun; wear helmets; the pavement will mess you up.

Carried a Yamaha Zuma 125 cc in a regular hitch carrier for years. About 250 lbs. Looked at the 50 cc model, but way too slow with 2 people. Plus has big cargo area under locking seat. 10000 miles on it now with only expense being tires. It is a 4 stroke and gets 80 mpg.

Howdy!

We started with 250cc scooter an after about a year moved up to a 400cc scooter. The 250cc was find for short urban rides. But if you plan on getting onto any major roadways you will want the larger 400cc or bigger for comfort and safety.

A neighbor gave me a Zongshen 50cc scooter that didn't run. Turns out the kill switch was bad. The rear brake light switch is broken so I need to try and figure that one out. Parts are available on the internet but you are more-or-less on your own trying to figure out if it will work for your application and it takes time to get them. There is little to no dealer support for a lot (not all) of the Chinese scooters.

The 50cc scooters may be ok for short jaunts in town. They are pretty much limited to about 30mph max. I have gotten mine up to 35 with a back wind and once I saw the nose bleed speed of 40 going downhill with a tail wind.

My recommendation is to purchase one of the well known names such as Yamaha, Honda, Vespa, etc. There is a reason they are more expensive and worth it. Parts are available over the counter in most moderate size cities along with a solid dealer network for support.

I would not consider anything less than 125cc. Especially if you are going 2 up. The smaller ones will get you around but they are constantly working at their max.

If you want the cool factor look at the Honda Grom. Maybe not technically a scooter but definitely cool.

Travel Scooter

Probably a late entry, but my wife and I have a Suzuki Burgman 650. It has taken both of us across the country many time, and myself to Florida doing the Saddle Sore 1000 (1000 miles in 24 hours). Top speed, for me, was 119 MPH (don't ask LOL) and it has never missed a beat. Full auto transmission or you can shift manually if you like. Mirrors fold in electrically and the windshield lowers the same way. I have my heated jacket and gloves wired in since I ride year around when the roads are dry. Plenty of room, just wish it had cruise control. Love it and wouldn't think of getting rid of it. By the way, I'm a retired motorcycle OFFICER and have owned about 65 motorcycles, 50 of them Harleys. Mine was about $8000 as a left over 2012. Current value is about $4000. I average 45 MPH but I tend to ride rather aggressively. Easily fit on a rack on the back of the Class A weight is about 500 pounds, I think.
Hope you find something nice. 50cc will be entirely too small, even for one. There will be times you want to go on the freeway and 50cc is not large enough to keep up with traffic and is illegal in some states.
Congrats on your license. I received the 5th MC license issued in OHIO after riding for 3 years before you needed one.

I had a Honda Helix, 250 cc for awhile.weighs 350 lbs. automatic transmission made it easy to use the engine to load it on the carrier. They are no longer made , the replacement is called a Reflex. Used Helixes are still out there, loved mine, carried 2 of us everywhere.

Agree with the Yamaha Zumo 125 recommendation. Have a Yamaha Vino 125, not quite the rugged styling of the Zumo but basically the same. Getting one of the cheap 50cc bikes would likely disappoint in terms of speed and reliability. If you ever get up in the Savannah area you’re welcome to take it for a spin. Bike dealers can be a PITA and getting used off Craigslist is hit and miss.

I’ve got an old beater bike I’d like to drag along with me but I probably need a trailer.

X2. I have one and it rocks. Fast enough if you get in traffic you can get out of the way. Highly recommend
