Road safety

I am a widow taking Rv on first long trip (KY to KS). Would it be safer for me to travel red roads vs highways?

Red roads are ok, but keep your eye on the fuel gauge....one nevers knows what's up ahead or if one gets stuck in road construction......I prefer state highways.....and you get to see more stuff...

Not sure what you mean by red roads, also what type of RV. If it is one that is effected a lot by passing trucks, I would suggest sticking to the better wider 2 lane highways and even 4 lane highways vs the interstates where trucks tend to blow by doing 20+ mph more than you are doing.

As to your travel plans you may want to check Covid-19 restrictions, I saw earlier today that Kansas had implemented 14 day quarantine on people entering from Alabama, Arkansas and Arizona, a few other states that don't start with A. https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/1...olation-Quaran

Hi Craftlady, and welcome to the iRV2 forums. Glad you joined us!

My personal opinion varies... if I'm destination-oriented I'll stick to the Interstates and major US highways. I've not been the luckiest traveler (tires, mechanical stuff) earlier in my life and like to be on well traveled roads when "I've got to get there" is the priority.

If leisure traveling I'm more inclined to take US and state highways and enjoy the drive, eat locally, etc. Primary consideration is overhead clearances.

In spite of using modern navigational aides I still buy a motor carrier road atlas every couple of years. If a highway isn't suitable for a big rig I do extra research.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip to Kansas!

US highways favorite roads to take. WE like to avoid the interstates. You get to see much more of the country this way as well as some interesting towns.

KY to KS ain’t much. Take whatever roads you fancy if you have the time for it. Just stay away from the big cities overnight.
