RV for 3

We want to RV and will be traveling with an adult son who needs to live with us.

Have looked at an Entegra Aspire and the sleeping for the 3rd person seems to be the sofa bed kinda thing. From what I hear in the forums not very comfortable (but I don't really know this first hand).

In a discussion with one person in the Class A forum, they said, you know 3 people in a Class A on a daily basis doesn't work well. Why don't you look at a Super Class C? I had not thought of that and now I see that Entegra (and Jayco) make a nice Super Class C in the 37M with a nice cab-over bunk.

So, realizing that you do have to climb up and down the ladder in the middle of the night to go to the toilet -- other than that, how is the comfort of the actual sleep itself? Looks like to me you could add a nicer after-market thicker mattress or memory foam or even futon and it would be far more comfortable than the sleeper sofa.

Any super C cab over people use the over the cab sleeping area on a routine basis and can comment on the comfort?

Also, what about the cab noise sitting in back of that big diesel?

Thanks,
Mike

You lost me at the "3 people in a Class A on a daily basis doesn't work well" part. Why do they not work in a huge, 40' to 44' long, diesel powered Class A bus, but work better in smaller, shorter, 37' diesel powered Class C truck?
re: engine noise. There's a lot less in a diesel pusher, than a diesel puller. Just the physics of proximity to the noise source.

My question was more about sleeping. In the 40' Entegra Aspire, other than the very nice king or queen bed, the only other (excluding bunks) sleeping is on the sleeper sofas!

With the Class C you have what looks like a very nice over the cab sleeping area that you could add a nice mattress and have a much more (?) sleeping arrangement for the 3rd person.

If you have a 40 or even 45 foot Entegra Cornerstone, you are sleeping that third person on the sofa. Each and every night.

I was just wondering if the cab over area is more comfortable. Looks like you could add quality sleeping material there.

That's really my question.

If passenger number 3 is any way disabled, and I am guessing he is, climbing up a ladder to get into an overhead bunk, or down to go to the lav at night, might be a bit more challenging, than making up and using a sofa bed at floor level. I don't know your exact situation, but that was my concern. I'm not trying to offend you in any way by my assumption about your situation. I'd just like to play Devil's Advocate here, and maybe add some food for thought regarding his safety. In the same situation, I'd opt for the Class A solution.

I doubt he is physically challenged if they are talking about a cabover. Many people with other challenges actually like being in a 'cozy' sleeping environment. My autistic niece definitely likes it. The cabover Class C could be perfect, not to mention cheaper!

Although I don't think money is an issue, based on their first 2 considerations (I could be wrong on that), I agree about the DP.
Better everything, overall, for 2 or more people.

I have a C Toyhauler, with the back “bedroom” area as a garage- which leaves the cabover for my sleeping. To answer your question, it can be very comfortable. I put a heavy/dense queen size foam topper and it makes all the difference. Two adults might be a bit much, but one is fine. The ladder is narrow and the rungs aren’t great in bare feet, but it’s perfectly serviceable. Making my own folding steps is on the to-do list, but not any big priority. It’s waaaay more comfortable than any of the pull out, fold down, rearrange jenga bed contortions that RV manufacturers jokingly call beds.

You are correct, it was not a $ issue but more a comfort / sleep ability issue for someone who will travel with us (not physically challenged). Everything we have hears is that sleeper sofas are not meant for everyday usage and will also be uncomfortable.

We just wanted to do our homework and it is driving us to a 2021 Thor Tuscany 40RT (dropdown cab bed).

We are having trouble finding out if there is a power plug in the dropdown area and that would definitely be an issue if no power.

Thank you for taking the time to answer. These forums are really very useful.

Taking everything that's been discussed so far into consideration (I'm glad I was wrong about the 3rd traveler's condition), I would agree that a drop down is better than a fold out, or pull out sofa bed. However, all manufacturers aren't necessarily created equal, and there are more than one Class A builds that have the cab area power drop down bed in some of their models, Winnebago for one. They call it an optional studio loft bed - it's 48" X 80" and probably the same general set up as the Thor model, in their diesel Class A lineup.
Some prefer the fit and finish of the Winnebago over the Thor. Personal preferences being what they are.
Good luck with your search.

If money is OK I would be looking at a class A with a bath and half for 3 people fulltime, even a bunkhouse with a bath and a half would be the best way for fulltime, maybe there is a super C out there with a bath and a half..

Go big fulltime with 3 people, just my 2 cents, been RVing for over 20 years, learned a few things along the way..

Typically an A DP is a "couple's" RV and the smaller C (TT and 5th Wheel) tend to be "family" oriented. So in either case looking for a bunkhouse, or bunk room model gives a 3rd person a real bed vs sleeper sofa, or should I say a (non)sleep sofa. There is a model of the Thor Omni/Magnitude "super C" which has the bunk and in the mid 30's foot range.

There are several class A gas models that have a drop down bed in the front of the MH. However, if there is a medical condition that would prevent the person climbing into an O/H bed, or if the person is very heavy - that would not work, and a bunk setup would be better.
