Sell Used for Over MSRP of New One

We are in the process of downsizing from our Newmar Class A to Class C and buying a park model in AZ. We were not quite ready to purchase yet but one popped up on Market Place that was local and was a 2021 Winnebago Mini Winne 31H that a 2023 MSRP was 161,127. We decided that if is a good deal we would purchase it early than planned.

Really nice couple and only used a few times during Covid and she was just laid off and they need to sell ASAP. Looks like it was in great shape till we got to the price.

They paid full MSRP during Covid and with a couple of options it price out at over 165,000. Then they bought a Warranty for 7200 dollars and a sales tax of 9.5% which is around 15,000.00 dollars. The bottom line is the payoff is over 12,000.00 over the MSRP of 161,127.

The wife broke down tears saying they were over their heads and really need to sell this. I felt sorry but I really don't need bunks and at the payoff, I could purchase a new one for less money and get the floor plan I really want.

With discounts off MSRP coming back I wonder how many young couples are going to be in the same position? Good Credit - Low Down Payments - Owe More than you new would cost.

Sad story but I suspect there will be many more. We're just like you wanting to downsize and even Dealers have used 1-2 year old B+ units priced higher then other Dealers with brand new units. Crazy times and I think it's going to get worse before it gets better . Our Class A's may not be very easy to sell either !

We owe some on our Class A but less than half of what they are listed for on RV Trader. We waiting since the Park Models in Tucson AZ that were 40 to 60 thousand two years ago are now 80 to 110 thousand so we are waiting for that market to settle down.

While looking at Class C's over the last few months it was obvious that anything 21-22 used was a no go for us. I was able to purchase a brand new 23 for 5k+ less than any used one on RV Trader. It's sad that people are upside down but the writing was on the wall as to what was going to happen with the market. My wife and I waited 2 years until the market calmed down enough for us to be comfortable with the purchase price.

They're all over the internet from 2020-2022 used and listed for full pop. You can get new ones for 40% off right now.

One consideration is that a used one (if used more than a time or two) may have a lot of the issues worked out that so many new units have. Were these 2022's and 23's built during covid? Supposedly the workers they used didnt know a nail from a screw.

Sad but in the end not your responsibility to solve others buying mistakes. Prior to Covid my discount off msrp for our class C was 37%. The base price has shot up and here I sit being able to sell unit for more than I paid. I’m not selling because I have no interest in starting over. Good luck in your future purchase. Your only responsibility is to get the best deal for you and your family.

Safe travels

Enjoy the journey

People are naturally slow to adapt to changing market conditions. But if the seller was telling the truth, their problem wasn’t necessarily making a bad purchase decision (notice all the costs that have nothing to do with the sale price: taxes, extended warranties.etc.) . Their much bigger issue is loss of income from wife losing her job. Very few people can seamlessly absorb such a financial setback. And no, there really isn’t a need for those who are financially set due 40* years of earning, investing and learning to post how they could manage such an event, because you likely couldn’t have managed it if you were 30, raising a couple of kids, had a mortgage and hadn’t yet gotten the benefits of increased pay and savings due to promotions, experience and seniority.

I sort of feel for people being so upside down but at the same time, have to wonder what they are thinking when they shell out that kind of money? I'd bet many, if not most, finance for some 20 years to just to get the lower note. For some reason, they don't care that they are paying nothing but interest for the first few years and that the total they would pay if going full term would probably be close to double what they initially financed. This on an RV that may not even survive to the end of the loan. It's a sad situation for the people mentioned in the opening post, and I know many others, but it is something they did to themselves.

All this my opinion, those big msrp numbers are pretty much made up and no where close to what it actually costs to manufacture and make a profit. A Mini Winnie is probably one of the nicer Class Cs but it should not be listed with an msrp of $161k. I figure 50% of that would probably be too high but at least it would be a more realistic figure to start out with.

Just a couple of thoughts. Asking price does not equal selling price. The Covid era buyers have lost a bundle on their purchases but are still unwilling to sell for actual market value. Those who sold during Covid sold for more than they paid and the new RVers think they should also be able to do the same. Now RV dealer inventory has caught up and now supply is greater than demand. Expect to see massive discounts vs MSRP but also expect to see massive MSRP increases. CWSWine, Arizona RV lots in the Yuma area have just about doubled in the last two years. Prices don't seem to be falling very fast due the influx of folks from Cali and the high number of RVers looking for a semi-permanent winter base. I don't expect the prices to return to the pre covid numbers unless there is a total collapse of the system.

Dealer thieves selling folks a $7200 “warranty” and clueless newbies thinking that was an acceptable price. I bet the service contract cost the dealer less than $1200 wholesale.

Why people think financing that much for an RV is sound practice is beyond comprehension.

LTV Pricing

I wish the price decreases applied to Leisure Travel Vans. All they have done over the last several years is raise prices. Have had a Wonder MBL AWD on order for a year and already seen two price increases. Some dealers selling with significant 10-20k markups over MSRP.
