Turn the key and if the engine does not start the first time, turn key off and wait 1 minute. Then restarts. Repeat when necessary. That's the symptoms. A new starter was not the answer. Have not cleaned an checked all wires to the starter including the ground. Have not looked at the GM steering column pull switch (from the key, on the side). Any other help would be appreciate.

Maybe it's just me, but with all my cars and RV's, I've always turned the key to "on" and gave it a minute to think, then turn to "start".
So many folks are in a hurry today, and they want everything 'right now".

On first start attempt , does the engine not turn over at all ?
There have been many ignition switch failures reported on GM chassis with a Saginaw steering column , due to overloading of the wiring and heat internal in the ignition switch.
Have a look under the dash for a switch mounted to the top of the column under the dash , for a switch that looks like this. Second photo ; first photo is the damage you may find that requires installation of a relay to repair.

The ignition switch has other vehicle applications and should be available at a regular auto parts store ( along with a new wiring connector if there is heat damage ) .
The heat damage is due to the circuit being overloaded by the additional items installed by the coach builder and unless a relay is installed , will re-occur.
Many posts on the install both with the purchase of a kit and as a DIY .

Mine sometimes doesn't crank and I have to pull up on the shifter. I have slack in the steering column which doesn't fully place the shifter linkage in park which means the neutral safety switch is not in park.
The bushings on the shift tube are worn and since I know to pull up I haven't gotten around to actually fixing it. Priorities right?

Well Mike I have no idea how I fixed the problem. The only think I did was remove, inspect, replace the connectors at the switch box.
Works for now.

My priority would be to fix this thing before it runs away and hurts or even worse kills someone.
I fully agree with you with the way I worded it. I've never had a problem with actually placing it in park which engages the parking pawl, or it coming out of park which is what the park release solenoid is for.
