First decision is whether to get a RV with slide-outs or not. Next is whether diesel or gas engine is the best choice (diesel more expensive to repair but provides 20% or more miles per tank of fuel.
A lot comes down to what is on the market. I saw a 2 year old Forest River diesel fully equipped with only 3,000 miles on the odometer for sale a week ago for $95,000 on Craigslist and that was a very good deal for someone.
It is more difficult with the pandemic but it pays to talk to people in RV campgrounds about what they do and do not like about their current RV and what they wish they had or plan to get in the future.
With the pandemic many people bought RV's to use this past year and in 2022 when the coronavirus may be under control there will be many of these motorhomes and trailers going up for sale. There will be a glut of used RVs hitting the market in the next 12-24 months.
Many people renting their motorhomes though at premium prices and these do provide a way to get hands on experience. I flew to Calgary and rented one for a couple weeks and there are options to rent Class C motorhomes almost anywhere in the USA.
