What's on the roof? Do I need a roof ladder?

Hi,

I'm still deciding on which RV to buy. I like the idea of slideouts to give more room. I think a slideout for the dinette is a must to open up the living space. I also see slideouts that go directly out the rear for the master bed. Not a bad idea, but I think having a rear slide means I don't get a roof ladder.

This ladder seems important to me in case I need to patch a leak or whatever comes up on the roof.

If I don't have a roof ladder, what other options are there? Carry a folding ladder? RVs are already cramped for storage space (I'm looking at a smaller unit like 25 feet long).

Your thoughts?

You're on the right track - whatever you decide getting up on the roof is important whether it's routine maintenance or a middle-of-the-night 'bang' from falling tree debris. The new collapsible ladders (not folding) may be your answer for best trade-off of space and weight.

In our coach we use a 17' folding ladder which I consider much more safe than the rear attached ladders. I use it to get on the roof or simply reach the sides for a good cleaning. Yup - I've got the room to store it.

If you get a free-standing ladder plan on cutting a sleeping bag pad into a smaller section and use it to pad the ladder as it rests against the side of your rig.

Let us know what you decide - we all learn! Thanks ...

I can no longer climb to the roof. But I carry a compact telescoping ladder as I can find somebody who can. But I can't always find someone who can -and- has a ladder.

My Minnie Winnie has a ladder and rear slide which contains my 80" Queen bed. Awesome design. Fully useable with all 3 slides in. I go up to clean and check on things. Be extremely careful up there!

My rig didn't come with a ladder so I got one of the telescoping ones from Home Depot. Fits in a sideways in a bay between the wall and slide tray. I did have to add a tie down to keep it in place. Also got a couple foam blocks made for canoes to slide around the ladder uprights to protect the MH finish. Cost was about $3.50 each at a sporting goods store.

I"ve been using an Xtend&Climb for a couple years now, use it outside and when kids sleep in the overhead bunk.

I ordered one on our new rig. I will never use it but thought it might be a good idea to have, specially when my son-in-law is with us. Hopefully we'll never need it.

I wouldn't buy a motorhome without a ladder to access to roof. I go up on the roof often to inspect it and clean it as well. It's also handy to get up on the roof to access the roof vents and AC unit.

I have a ladder on my Winnebago SunStar, but the weight limit I believe is 225 lbs. I'm at 260 lbs in bathroom, Birthday suit, afraid to use. Went and bought a telescopic ladder from Amazon with a 330 lbs limit. https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Exte.../dp/B008LD1TDK for $90

Looking at getting that one also.
Do you feel the 12.5 ft is tall enough / stable?
Thanks!

Its what I have for my Sunseeker 11'3" roof. Much easier/safer to climb at angle than wall hugging ladder.Be sure to check that your roof supports walking on top some newer small units dont

I just bought this ladder from Ebay $99.00 no shipping.

https://www.ebay.com/i/122123701258?...D1284722911502

Worked great for me to get to the top of the 13 foot class C. Also can be used as a step ladder. Made out of aluminum.

We have a ladder on ours put it is not really needed. How often do you really need to go up?? A good home ladder will work when you need to go up. How often to you go up on your house.?

It's tall enough, it is stable, but a little shaky but strong enough.
