You can dial 911 in an emergency and ANY cell phone carrier that see's your 911 call will pick it up and relay it.
Found that out years ago when I had no coverage on Verizon.

If you can connect to their tower, which isn't guaranteed. Another way to communicate isn't a bad idea in an emergency.

Interesting. We ran into the Oilfield gate guards at the Quartzsite show. Thought about giving it a try just to see what it was like. I hope things go well for you.

Well, ...good question. up till now I have been managing my outgo so that no immediate demands were made upon me while at the gate except for of course watering my tires.
Today however they brought not one but TWO restrooms. So now I have one for no. 1 and one for no.2...
Life is sweet...

Thanks for sharing. We had considerd trying it at one time.
pay seems fair for what the job is but everything i have read it sounds like it either boring as hell or you end up at a gate that has traffic all day every day with almost no down time. Not a lot of in between.

A couple we know is doing the gate job and they stated they will not take a West Texas gate job again. The couple of gates they watched were in remote areas and they were either dealing with dust or mud constantly.

So far the pipeline gates seem to go in "waves" of activity...days there will be nothing and then a new crew comes down the line and you are really busy for a couple of days, then it slacks off again as that crew moves away down the line and the next crew comes later.
And it's amazing how fast they move.

...Well it IS Texas after all. And I must admit there are places I prefer.
We bought a big piece of carpet remnant before we left Tucson to put down in the trailer to sacrifice to the dirt of Texas.

Your story would make a great "Twilight Zone" story. "Were the cattle leaving the dung piles, trying to communicate with the gate guard ?"....You decide !

Our friends are now guarding a storage yard near Houston and staying in a RV campground w/pool. There are good gate jobs in Texas, just not West Texas per them.

From my experience in finding this job your outlook on that may depend on money. Most of the $200/day gates are in rural west Texas.
That is why the pipeline job is pretty good. The pay is better by far and it's really not in the oil fields of far west Texas.
This pipeling is running from Del Rio to Alice/Corpus.
