Open Roads Diesel Card

Just returned from a trip from the Seattle area to Albuquerque for the balloon fiesta. I have a 2007 Monaco Knight DP towing a Chevy Silverado 2500HD and wanted to share a breakdown of fuel costs using my Open Roads Diesel discount card along the way. Total miles driven was 2,914. Total pump price of diesel was $2,252.40. Total discounted price was $1,897.89 for a savings from pump price of $453.49, a 20% discount across the board. Not too shabby!

Do they take the money out of your checking account?

Those numbers don't add up. $2252.40 minus 1897.89 only shows $354.51 difference. Did you leave something out?

Yes they take the money out of your checking account. Have been using TSD Open Roads card for several years now, and would highly recommend them to anyone.

I will have to pass on the checking account deal if that's the only way to pay.

I got a TSD card this year. I opened a savings account just for this use and transfer money to it as it gets low. This isolates it from my other accounts and limits any risk. So far so good. We have saved a ton of money by using it and man very happy with it

TSD is flat out awesome.

Free to signup. They only make money if you use the card. Usually fantastic savings.

If worried about the direct withdrawal from bank account it is no different than utilities oranyother company. If worried have a 2nd account.

Yes, I see my savings amount was incorrect in my spreadsheet....oops..
A savings of $304.61 about 14% overall. Some places more of a discount than others I should also say. And yes I have an account with my bank just for the card and resupply it as needed.

Is it just me or having others noted that diesel prices for stations which accept TSD cards are significantly higher than those that do not?

Not really. Take a look at the prices at Pilot & Flying J. Yes I know smaller stations might have cheaper prices but they might be hard to get into or off the beaten path. When traveling, I'm not going to go hunting for a cheaper price just to save a few cents and waste my time

I have read that there is a lot of people that open a second account just for the card and transfer the money. Having the money taken out of your checking account is no different than doing a automatic pay for credit cards, or other expenses that most of us have set up. I do have a checking account that I pay all my bills out of, with check or direct payment. I have not had any problems with Open Roads. We have to use the truck stops since we have fuel tanks on both sides of the truck. With the card it gets our price down where it is affordable compared to other stations off of the interstates. The truck stops on average are easier to get in and out of.

If you are just looking at retail price comparisons, the truck stop retail price is likely higher. If you look at the TSD discount prices compared to the retail prices of Gas Buddy stations, you will most often see good discounts.

You won't see the TSD prices unless you get the Open Roads fuel card. The card costs nothing to get, you don't have to use it, but you won't have the tools to make an accurate comparison of actual prices without the Open Roads card and app.

TSD open road has resulted in $0.80 average discount per gallon on our fuel and DEF over the last three fill ups. The money is debited and redeposited directly into our checking account which caused me a little heartburn. But we just get a receipt or take a picture of the final pump reading and reconcile the final transaction which comes within an hour. No concerns, very satisfied.
