Renting Out My TT
I'm considering buying my first TT. Frankly, I'm looking at buying because it seems as if no one in the DC/Northern VA suburbs has a small ultralight TT I can rent for my trips.
With that in mind, and since I'm retired and living on Social Security, it behooves me to explore the possibility of earning income from the rental of my TT to offset the storage costs and other expenses, to say nothing of part of the purchase price itself.
Is this a good or bad idea? Any suggestions about how to go about it?

Insurance could be an issue.
Non-competent renters could be a problem.
Qualified tow vehicle with proper brakes would be a question.
If the insurance works and you could qualify the competence of the renters and rent your tow vehicle with it... it might work... but I wouldn't do it. Too many things to go wrong.

It's a totally bad idea. Even if you get a damage deposit, one small mishap could cost you more then you'd collect. There are too many things that can break and the average renter hasn't a clue how most things work.

Agree, with the number of things that can get broken, and just issues of towing, I would never rent my trailer. Highly unlikely that I would even let someone I know use it...

Sounds Like "High Maintenance"
Putting aside the idea of renting my TT, all these warnings about all the things that can go wrong have me wondering if a TT will be too "high maintenance" for my pocketbook.
Moreover, I'm 71 and not at all mechanically inclined, so I foresee a very limited possibility of doing much maintenance myself.

Might be more than you want to spend... but there are several options available in Northern VA... here are two:

Ace RV Rentals
Good luck and happy trails!

Anyway you look at it is a BAD idea.
I wouldn't.
Liability, broken things, etc.
No way no how.

Renters have very little invested into "your" trailer, and will NOT take care of it. Add the fact that they don't know how everything works, and there's no way to "train" them in a 30 minute walk-thru, it's a recipe for expensive disaster. If you want your trailer trashed, go for it.

Any way I look at it it s BAD idea
As others have pointed out
Insurance most insurance policies say yoou cannot rent your vehicle out, also, for a towable, the tow vehicle's insurance will be the primary insurance should an accident happen. Are you really willing to trust a renter's insurance policy???
Tow vehicle quality
Renter incompetence
If you can't afford that have you thought about buying a used one and save yourself a ton of money and keep your sanity.

Renting Out My TT
Long time reader, first time poster or replying in this case. The short answer is it depends. There are at least two sites that I use to rent out my trailer. RVShare and Outdoorsy. Like many have said, you never know who is going to rent it or how they will take care of it. Both sites can collect a deposit for you (that you set) and provide insurance. In my case I bought a new trailer and was offered very little for my trade in (sight unseen). I explained the condition it was in, all the extra I had added but they wouldn't budge. So I kept it and put it up for rent. At this point I have made 5 times more than the trade in offer and I still own the trailer. So like I said it depends.

Your initial post gives the impression you don't have much in the way of disposable income. If that is correct, your second statement, which is quoted above, is a pretty good indicator you shouldn't buy an RV. They take mechanical inclination and money to maintain. I think you would regret your purchase and would suggest you not do it.

Renting Out My TT
If RVing on a budget is the forum topic, it is a valid question.
