. . . I was ignorant of the many advantages of this method for preparing trail meals, but I've come to believe that it's an ideal way to make interesting and delicious meals that allow a person to easily regulate calories and nutrition in both a cost-effective as well as a "weight-effective" way. By that, I mean that you can be precise not only in seeing that you get sufficient calories to maintain your trail-crushing stamina, but you won't have to pay a massive weight penalty to do so.

The only other thing I'd suggest is perhaps choosing a condo in the Southwest for your December-February regrouping phase each year. Why? Because you can find some great hiking all over the Southwest that you won't have to wait until springtime to explore. That is, of course, if the Southwest is conducive to the work your other half will be doing.

'There is a HUGE difference between freeze drying and dehydrated food. They already have a freeze dryer, Harvest Right no doubt and they will NEVER give it up now. It is just WAY TOO good a way to prep meals and take food on the road.
If you are smart, you freeze dry meals non stop for 2-3 months and then hit the road with food that weighs about %15 of its original weight and takes 5 minutes and some warm water to eat a great meal. UNBELIEVABLE system

In the planning stage

We are retiring in 2yrs and planning to travel so we're downsizing but still would like a home base in a warmer climate. Our current home in the northeast is not practical to keep so looking at SC,TN,GA, FL maybe others. We would prefer a 55+ community so the place is looked after while we're away. Started looking at stick-built home communities, but way out of our price range to purchase as well as the monthly fees, especially since we''ll only be there about 6 months. Now looking at mobile home parks or RV manufactured home communities, several different names for them. Most are more affordable however we could do without the amenities if we could save a couple hundred $$ a month. We are in the country now so many of these places are seem very tight, but a little yard with some space-I have seen a few of those. We're just looking for a small place to have tools and other belongings to go to for RV maintenance, upgrades, etc. and hangout for a while. Maybe we're looking for a unicorn, just curious if anyone else is doing the same thing and has experience.

Originally, we had a park model in a campground in AZ. Great location in Lake Havasu City, but our unit was on leased land. So we paid monthly rental which went up very fast over our several years there. It more than doubled in 6 years. Plus, the campground management was bad and they had trouble keeping the aging utilities working. Besides that . . .

Anyway, we also found stick house prices way way high, especially for what you get. So . . .

We started looking at resident-owned mobile home 55+ RV parks. Zillow will not help much finding these places.

I used Resident Owned Communities because they have a comprehensive park list, at least in CA. I search other states, but CA seemed to have the most.

Long story short . . . we ended up in a 1400 sq ft mobile home in Idlewheels Mobile Home Park. We own the house, and the park owns the land. We paid a little over $86K (+ $28k park stock buy in). Monthly space rent is $108.

Plus, we're an hour from Yosemite. We found the unicorn. Happy hunting.

Newbie same idea

We retire in 2 yrs and want to get away from NY and the snow. Want to sell our house and find a place warmer for the winter and travel mostly in the summer. Also prefer age restricted community where it will be safe to leave our home for months. Looking at all around retirement friendly states but prefer less mainstream ones like Florida which seem very crowded. Maybe GA, TN, SC but so far places are very expensive to purchase plus monthly fees required even when we're not there. But this may not make sense until we're sure where we want to be. If we travel and look for a place we would want to store some things until we find out new home. I'm wondering if anyone is in the same situation and have done this would have suggestions. Where to find affordable homes? Does this sound like a good plan? If money was no object it would be a no brained.

Sorry for the nearly duplicate post, couldn't find the original post, newbie at forums as well.
Thanks for the response TechWriter.
We're interested more towards the east coast, but did you travel to figure out where you wanted home base or did you already know?

We knew that the South West was the most desirable home for us because of our travels in that area, but we also looked for S&B homes in several other locations.

However, when we found a potential home in a resident-owned park, we visited it before deciding.
