Hi Jennifer,
Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you've been following us for sometime so you know the ropes.
Where you are on the road with children and schooling on the road I was wondering if you make up your own curriculum or follow a formal one available from some company. By the way I think you made a wise decision to home school.

Hi RJay,
Thanks for the welcome! We are so excited about Fulltiming with our family. We have homeschooled our children for about 6 years now. We are eclectic HSers. I piece our curriculum together. I think there are many total curriculums out there that are great though.
Safe Travels,
Jennifer

to home schooling. FTing seems like a wonderful curriculum enhancement. Happy trails to you

Jennifer,
Good for you! I think there are too many things being taught in school that should be taught at home; and what's taught at school is only taught to the depth of a test rather than a depth of understanding.

Fulltiming with kids!
I just posted this in the new rigs forum, as someone there was mentioning buying a coach to travel for a year with the kids in... That prompted me to do a search for "roadschool" on the forum, and I found this thread!
We are gearing up for our "big adventure" with the kids, and will spend a year traveling full time with our three girls. We sometimes get a few non-RVing folks now and then that will question why we would home school and "drag them around" the country... and my answer to that when we get it is that we are not young forever, health - even for the children can change quickly, God has not promised us that we will have a tomorrow here on earth, and our children will learn more experiencing the world for a year than they ever will in a classroom with text books alone.
Our kids will read about Gettysburg while walking the actual fields of battle, learn about the liberty bell and then go out and touch it, study the Constitution - and then stand in the hall where it was signed. They will experience the force of nature and know the thunder of Niagara Falls - have a study of marine biology followed up with a day at the Baltimore Aquarium.... and what child could ever learn more about American government than those who follow up each of their studies with an extended field trip within Washington DC to experience what they read about on the way there?
It will be expensive, things won't always be easy, but none of us will ever for the rest of our lives look back on our family's bonding and experience and think, gee, we shouldn't have done that... Much more likely there are thousands of families out there that look back on an opportunity like this, and ask why they didn't do that when they had the chance.

I applaud you, we home schooled our 3 boys, I only wish we had been in a position to travel, in a MH, but God saved that experience for our later years. Now we are trying to use our experience to facilitate those who are fortunate enough to do it.

Very well stated. Makes me wish I could have done this with my parents.

I agree, very well stated! My heart is right there with you. I am so thankful that we have this opportunity with our kids. Though our "trip" is open ended and our plans will be set in jello. We may go for one year, or as has happened with many of our new fulltiming friends, we may decide to keep going down the road indefinately. There is so much to see, do and learn in this big ol' country.

Fulltimer here, but WAAAAAY too young to be retired. LOL! I don't yet have any children, but I was myself homeschooled on the road, and plan to do the same whenever the time comes that I do have children.
I was signed up through Christian Liberty Academy so they handled all of the testing, grading etc.
As for what I plan to do in the future (after I have kids) I plan to create my own curriculum, using a combination of "Classical Education" (teaching via a study of the classics in Literature, Art, Music, etc) and the ABekaBook curriculum/texts, as well as hands on studies via "field trips" to historic sites, museums, etc..
I also plan to get a teaching degree as well. It's a requirement in some states that one of the parents have been a school teacher or at least trained as one, and getting a teaching degree will just make complying with various state laws so much easier.

We're homeschoolers in NJ, still in the thinking/planning stages of fulltiming. Dh is in sales throughout VA and WVA, so we'd most likely be sticking to that area for most of the year, and taking a month or two here and there for extended travels.
We've HS all along, but the travel trailer (we think) lifestyle will be the big change for us! We are hoping that we can spend a few mths at a time at a good campsite, then explore another area of va for a few mths, etc., with some wintertime snowbirding in FL!
I'm new here, so I'll keep reading during my research!

I love the map track. But I wonder how you do this. Can you point me in the right direction?
