Although this has probably been discussed before, I couldn't find a recent tag to jump in on so Ill ask the question I have in mind.
Your suggestion as to which or what banking institution that is nation wide to use for a checking account. We are going to be full-timers and currently have a couple of accounts which we wish to maintain. However, we are thinking it would be convenient to have access to a ready cash source or recognizable institution when writing a check. Your suggestions please. Thank you

Look at Bank of America. Many branches and online banking as well.

I am not full timing, but We do five month trips, so half timing. We use Bank of America, they have a very good online site--pay bills, etc. We have a lot of monthly bills charged to AmEX, and pay this on line. (Get the points from AmExp.)

They have branches all over.

I agree with the Bank of America suggestion,I just hope they're friendlier in other branches than where I make my son's deposits...

He is away at school in Florida and the BOA is very convenient for him,so I use the closest one to my house to make his deposits.
Staff always seems "starched" and too professional for my liking.

As I said...this is probably an isolated case.

I'd also suggest BofA...I travel quite a bit for work and they seem to be everywhere- especially now after consuming Fleet. Of course, I may be a little biased...I've been with them for over 30 years, but actually go "INTO" a building approx 1 time per year. Their Homebanking (or now Online Banking) is about the best in the business- I actually worked with the VP of Customer Service in San Fran a few years ago to help them develop their new site.

Good luck!

I guess I'll be the dissenting voice at this point.

I use NetBank. They truly are an internet bank, everything is done on-line, no bricks & motar branches of any shape fashion or form. However they are "everywhere", all you need is an ATM, Mailbox or UPS store.

Checking is just like using any other bank. I have not had anyone question my check because of the bank's name anywhere I have been in the U.S. or overseas. There have just been the normal rejections because my address on the check was not "local".

Making deposits is a simple matter of using free, postage-paid envelopes to mail the deposit. There is also a way to print your own envelope for use at any UPS store. Same as the U.S. Mail, free delivery of your deposit in 3-5 days. And then there is a nationwide network of ATMs. These are not just NetBank ATMs, NetBank has agreements with dozens of banks and you can look up the location of all these ATMs on the NetBank web site.

And to top it off, NetBank pays the highest checking interest rate in the country.

I used to keep dual accounts, one at BofA and the other at NetBank. After a few years of really enjoying NetBank I moved everything there.

i have been using first internet bank of indiana for several years..firstib.com..they pay 1.26% interest on your balance..they reimburse you up to $6 per month for atm use..you can use any atm and they will refund the fee..set up direct deposit for pensions, ssa ,etc. they give you postage paid envelopes ..they have a moneymarket acct paying 3.5% which you can transfer in and out of as required..jim

I use USAA:
All of my income checks go straight to the bank.I pay almost all of my bills on line through their bill pay service (on their site, not the billing company)

Use their ATM cardand they rebate any ATM chargesback to me.

All in all, we write very few checks any more.

Interesting and informative thread. We're considering switching banks since we'll be going full time in July. BOA sounds like the way to go. I like to have a brick and mortar place to visit on occasion.

We have been doing on-line banking for several years. I hate to change but will need to in order to accommodate access to our funds when we need to.

Don't write checks. Use a debit card and online banking.

We also have had good experience with BOA and pay all bills on line. We use a debit card for purchasing our groceries, etc. We have also stopped all paper bills from being mailed. Cuts down on postage from our remail service.

Whatever you choose (we love net bank), make sure you start at LEAST 3 months in advance. We are happy we began a year early.

Take my word for it.
