Best state to buy a MH/establish residence

Hi Folks, we are thinking of going full time. We are looking to buy either a new or late model Entegra Cornerstone. What state would you recommend to establish residence in to minimize the purchase cost?

We have no S&B (currently rent) so we would like to establish our domicile in the most sales tax friendly state; more specifically what state has the lowest sales tax for a MH? (we have Medicare so health insurance is not an issue) We currently live in North Alabama (Huntsville).

I have heard that if you own your RV for more than 6 months, Florida will not charge you any additional taxes if you decide to move to Florida. Anyone know if that's true?

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

If you are really going to be full time and can travel for your coach the the place to buy it is where you get the best price. We actually flew 1000miles and then drove another 500 miles to get our coach.

Residence???? We use St. Brendan's Isle in Green Cove Springs Florida for our domicile, driver's lic, voter reg. No income tax state, cheap registration fees and reasonable sales tax. You also do not need any kind of special driver's license just a regular license to drive you RV no mater the wt. Some states will require you to get a CDL (?) license.

It is not a CDL, it is an enhanced license. And if you can't pass the simple 20 questions written part and the 20-30 minutes driving, THEN YOU HAVE NOT BUSINESS DRIVING A BIG RIG THAT CAN CAUSE HUGE DAMAGE IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG!

You don't have to shout.

How many RV accidents are caused because the driver doesn't have an "enhanced license"? I know hundred's of Big-Rig RVers, most of whom drive on an ordinary license, and none have had an accident because the license in their pocket is not "enhanced".

Some states may require you to have an air brake endorsement. Not a big deal. Usually just some class time.
Never could figure out why as I have no intention of repairing the system. Aside from a slight delay there is not much difference. Parking brake is a knob rather than a handle....

I don't know fully how the brakes on my pickup work either, nor do I care as long as they work.

What state will be best for your situation is up to you and your tax accountant. The state of preference for you will depend on your finances.

Look at the Escapees website and explore the options. They have a section to explain setting up a domicile.

I agree with BARBARAOK on the additional license testing for over 26000 lb combined weight. The test is not hard to pass and should be required for much lower weights.

Check out South Dakota..... We moved our residence there in June. Only 4 percent ANY vehicle purchase and cheap license plates. Only have to return there once every 10 years for drivers license. Only have to spend 1 night in hotel or campground to qualify for residence.
Dakota Post collects our mail and sends it to us any time we want and any where we are.....

Best state to buy a MH/establish residence

Keep in mind if you have low or no taxable income ( only ss and or withdrawing from std savings) your options open up more. Full timing you have no real estate tax to deal with so unless they tax the rv as such, the standard charts showing “livability” take that ( real estate) into account and are off some. Escapees is the best most comprehensive site and place to join.
Yes if you’ve owned and licensed an rv more than 6 months elsewhere Florida will not tax you on it. I came from Oregon paid no sales tax when I bought ( Oregon has no sales tax ) and paid no tax to Florida when I moved .. as long as I owned the cars rv’s longer than 6 months. You will pay a “ new wheels” fee for bringing a new rig into the state ( a few hundred if I remember correctly.

If you are JUST talking about the purchase of the RV how about a state with no sales tax like Oregon. You can always change states later. We keep Oreon and because we have bought 3 RV's and a 4th on order (including the rig we hit the road with) and 3 different car's/trucks we have saved a bundle on sales tax. Far more than enough to offset any income taxes I would guess.
