Don't get taken by the Christmas Grinch

Last week we bought a motorhome from an individual and even though we felt like we had done a good job in checking it over ourselves we got taken for a ride. Nothing replaces having it checked over by an RV mechanic even if you are a seasoned owner.

Sadly the repair costs will keep us from getting on the road next month like we had planned. It is no ones fault but our own but I do feel like we have been taken advantage of.

The whole reason we were buying in the first place was to get my dh out of the cold winter and spend some time in South Texas and New Mexico. He is in bad health and is looking at a heart transplant sometime down the road and the cold and the heat really get to him. We have a travel trailer but the motorhome would have allowed him to rest while I drove and setting up the TT is too much physical effort for him. I thought this motorhome was going to be the answer. I was wrong.

Bottom line is be sure you ALWAYS have a used RV looked over by a mechanic before buying. Saddest thing is I know that the previous owner was aware of the issues! He actually told me this on the phone! I have really lost my faith in people over this. I guess it is hard to trust anyone now days and that is just so disappointing.

Sorry for your problems. Hopefully you will be able to get it running soon, and your husband will feel well enough to enjoy it.
Best of luck to you both, maybe when you are able to travel in it he'll feel better.

Might want to check your state laws. If the owner knew of the defects and didn't tell you you might have some legal recourse.

I agree with Mr. D.. however.. How about you tell us what the problems are.

Who knows.. Some folks may know of a less expensive cure.

Example: I know of one part, Just one part, The last time I priced it 125 dollars as I recall.

So I did some research and got a BETTER replacement for.... 27 dollars delivered.

Sorry to hear about your issues with the new MH.

Don't quit trusting people just yet. I think we meet a lot of good people as we go through life, just seems the stinkers are the ones we remember sometimes.

As Mr_D said post your issues and maybe someone here will be able to help out.

Best wishes for you husband's health.

Merry Christmas

Local Inspectors

Has anyone thought of starting a sticky of local RV inspectors that we could rely on if we decide to buy from a private party we could look up the local iRV2 inspector and we could rely on them inspecting the RV and giving us an unbiased report??????

Thanks for all your support! After much negotiation, we were able to actually get the previous owners to buy it back from us! I am so grateful because I know they really didnt have to do that.

I only buy new. There is no way you or an RV mechanic can know everything that could be wrong with something as complicated as an RV.

To each his own.

Don't be so sure, he may have gotten some legal advice that it would be in his best interest to buy it back.

Now, line up someone to do a thorough check of whatever you decide to buy and then get looking again.

Best of luck to you and your hubby.

Maybe, maybe not!! If you didn't check state laws you have no way of knowing if he had to buy it back or not.
But good going, now find something you like that's in better shape!! Get it inspected first!!

I hope that we will soon be searching for one but DH is a bit hesitant right now after the whole debaucle. I can't blame him for it at all though. I feel that way myself.

We will definitely have it checked out by an RV mechanic even though we know that it is not an iron clad guarantee there will be no issues with it. Just a little bit more peace of mind especially since DH is not in the best of health to do a thorough inspection himself.
