Freezer in basement
for those fulltimers with class A mh.
Do you find the basement freezer
something you cant live without
or just a waste of space??
Help me narrow down my choices.

I've considered adding a small freezer in our basement storage area. Sometimes we camp host in remote areas and it would be good to have extra freezer storage on hand. It could also be used to stock up on frozen groceries that are on sale.
It depends on your style of RV life.
Adding a small freezer would be easy to do at any time for around $200.

We have one, use it all the time. Really handy when you find ribs or pork butts on sale

We have a 10-year-old 2 cu ft, single zone Norcold MRFT 60. Basement fridges are more than a convenience. It's our "Plan B" in case our main fridge fails.
However, at 10 years old we're looking at replacing it before it fails. Though this model is no longer available, Dometic has plenty of choices.

We use ours for beverages. It's just the two of us most of the time, so the residential refrigerator can easily hold all our food.

Super useful... but... they are dependent on 110vac. So, when travelling or boondocking, either way, you would need an inverter and battery bank. Evan a small inverter would work, say 150 watts. While underway, the engine alternator would keep that batteries topped off, and boondocking you should get 48 hours or so before having to crank the generator to charge the batteries. I don't have one but we are considering full timing and if we do, that's what I would do.

Ours came with one, but I have only used it once. I took it out to make room for the WeberQ.

We used a 3cuft upright mini for 4 years without issue. We ran it off the same inverter the fridge runs on. Nice to be able to stock up when we find good sales.

We have one similar to the one pictured above. Use it all the time and are very careful of opening it up if we are not in a full hookup site.

Yes, if you don't have FHU, keeping the door shut will keep things frozen. It also helps to throw blankets/sleeping bag over the freezer to keep it better insulated when not running. You should be able to get 2-3 days frozen inside that way.
The benefit of the portable freezer is it can be removed for shorter trips when it's not needed.

Not true. My Norcold is either 12V or 110VAC. So are the Dometic units.
I keep my 12V basement cooler on with minimal solar power.

We have ours wrapped in 1/2" thick Styrofoam (??) insulation and it does help. Last winter before last we spent several months in the wilds of Aridzona boondocking and had no problems while it was on 12V current. We found a sale on for beef medallions (poor mans Fillet Mignon) and bought up a bunch last November. We still have a couple of those left and they cook wonderfully on the grill. I also have a penchant for Flat Iron Steaks that we can't ever find in Canada and those we get whenever we see them. I would never think of taking ours out of the unit. 
Edited to add... Non of the added insulation is in the way of the required air circulation on the freezer.
