We have FTed for 7 years, and have always had FT insurance. Personally, I wouldn't be confident enough to not have it, mainly for the downside of something happening and it becoming an issue which caused a "no pay" by the insurance company.
The two primary differences I am aware of are these. 1. Most (if not all) of the non-FTers policies have a specific clause exempting coverage if the unit is used as a primary residence. A FTers policy specifically amends that clause. 2. The kind of liability that is normally covered by a homeowners policy (which you don't have if FTing) is picked up under FTers RV coverage. Thus if someone is hurt while in or around your RV and sues, your RV coverage will kick in.
There are other more subtle issues that may or may not concern you. One that we have actually experienced was someone breaking into the rig while we were out at dinner in San Francisco. They cleaned out all of my DW's jewelry, along with our electronics. We didn't have to explain to the insurance company why my wife had ALL of her jewelry with us out "camping", they understood we were FT'ers.
I've seen the discussion about "how would they know-why would you tell them". I guess you could take your chances. I don't think they would ever bother to check, care, or know in many cases, if you didn't volunteer it when you take out the policy. But, and this is big to me, the normal time they investigate is once a claim is made.
Again, using ourselves as an example, we would have absolutely no ability to show any other primary residence. Every single piece of business we have shows our domicile as our mailing address in SD. License, registration, Fed tax filing, health insurance, banking, etc. And it takes almost no checking to see that our address is just that, a mailing service. And that is true for all mailing services used by FTers.
I hope this helps. What you decide to do is your choice, but I tried to give you most of the reasons FTers carry FT insurance. I'm sorry you didn't get a serious response before when you asked. I expect that's probably because the people who responded aren't FTers and really didn't have a clue.
Good luck
