How far out do you make reservations?
We are full time in a 44' DP.
How far out do you make reservations?
We are trying to find a balance between advanced reservations and accounting for unforeseen circumstances that alter our plans.
There have been a few instances where we have paid cancellation fees so trying to avoid that.
Thoughts?

We seldom make reservations. Sometimes do, maybe a day or two ahead, once we know where we are going and when. Only specifically do if it's a holiday weekend, a busy area, specific venue and dates needed/desired, etc.

very seldom do we make advanced reservations. we boondock four or five days and find a Passport America campground to dump and fill.
We are full timers and follow the sun. Right now we are hosting in Wy until Sept and will head to California to see family and then to Florida by January.

Making reservations can best be determined by when you are going, height of the season or off season? Where you are going. I know of several RV parks that need reservations a year ahead because they are always booked. Having a 44 footer doesn't mean you can fit in all the campsites. So you are limited. A lot of CGs only have a $10 cancellation fee, and that's worth it to make sure you can get in.

It depends on what you're comfortable with, where you're going, and when.
Some people rarely make reservations at all, some don't like taking chances and reserve almost everything well in advance.
If you're going to spend the winter someplace like Florida and don't want to move every week or two, then you need to make reservations as much as a year in advance. If you want to stay in a National Park in high season, you may need reservations 6 months to a year in advance. If you like state parks and Corps of Engineers campgrounds, many of them fill up on weekends a month or 2 in advance, especially holiday weekends.
We don't like to scramble looking for someplace to stay at the last minute, so we try to be aware of the season, holiday weekends, etc. and we make reservations accordingly. Even if it's not high season and we're traveling from one location to another, we usually call from the road mid morning to make sure our chosen campground space available.

Summer near Seattle - make them in January, seriously. Very limited space available near the city.

We'd never travel by car and not have hotel reservations. I'm not keen on sleeping in my car.
But in an RV? As long as there is a Wal-Mart or similar on the way who cares? You're already home.

You are assuming all Walmart are always available. Not true.

We have been making reservations far in advance because we don't like to Wally-dock with the 40' + toad. We often find that there are plenty of campgrounds with open spots, they are too small for our rig.
Right now we are booked for the next three months, plus Jan/Feb at our favorite winter resort, where there was only one spot left after us.

That's why I qualified it with "as long as..." but you're right.
