Mailing Address Question?
So, today was my last day of work & I am now officially retired!
Will soon be packing up the MH and hitting the road & have a question about mail forwarding -
Have discussed with one of our kids the possibility of using their address as our domicile address, and asking them to forward mail periodically. The first question I got was, "will doing that for you & Mom have any tax impact for us?' My gut reaction is "No", but am wondering if there is anything I may be missing? IS there any impact on them from a tax standpoint if we have them collect and forward our mail? If it matters, we currently live in TX, and so does our daughter and her family.
any input would be appreciated!

Make you, and your families, life simple. Use a regular mail service.
Since you are already a TX resident just change your address to the Escapees Livingston address. Check out their web site, they should have all the information you need.
It is soooooo much simpler that having friends or relatives collect, sort, and forward you mail.

X2 on Escapees! A few bucks a month and the price of postage, and you're set. No hassle for anyone.

LOL. It shocks me some times how our kids come up with all sorts of excuses to not have to do for us after we spent 20 years getting them raised up and ready for the big world.
How can having your mail delivered to their address effect them for tax purposes? I dont see it as a,big deal, but I guess since their balking helping you, chalk it up to them being them and like someone else said, join Excapers, or simply go get a mail box as mail box express or someplace similar.

While that may seem like a strange question, when I was in the service, I used my brother's address. He lost his job and filed for assistance, they turned him down saying the household income was too high. They were counting my salary because some tax database showed it.

Long time Texas residents and three year full-timer. Used our son as a mail forwarder for a year and found that he just wasn't as interested in doing this as someone who does it for a living. So we went to Livingston and changed our address to the Escapees mail forwarding address. Accomplished all of this in about four hours including changing vehicle registrations, voter registration and drivers license. Escapees has preformed flawlessly and we've been Happy Campers ever since.

We also were in TX when we retired, so 'moved' to Livingston even though our daughter was (and still is) in the Dallas area. We didn't want her to have to worry about our mail. Plus, she was living in an apartment at the time and moved every 2 yrs or so. Just was easier to use Escapees as mail service.

No, that may be ill advised. Some financial businesses and some state agencies do not accept PO boxes or local private mail boxes as a residential address. An established RV outfit and mail forwarder like Escapees has all these issues ironed out and coordinated.

Save yourself some grief in the family, it will happen sooner or later. Get an organization like Escapees to do it for you. They won't forget or be too busy to take care of you mail.

We chose Escapees mail service as well and couldn't be happier. Some of my vehicle insurance went down as well by getting out of Dallas. No one has questioned the physical address including hand gun licensing.

Escapees is good since you are in Texas. We are in Florida so we use SBI; great service.

We tried it with one of our daughters and like many others, found that she was "too busy" to take care of our mai the way we wanted it done and went with private mail service that gives us a street address and a PO Box to receive mail. Much like the Escapees.

Interesting reading others thoughts here. I am not sure about tax consequences and I am not a lawyer but in the states I have lived in they always ask who lives at the same address with me. It can/will impact your insurance rates. So, from my perspective I think your kids are asking legitimate questions.
As others have said do it the correct way and get a legit mail service. It's ~$20 a month or so.

I'm a former TX resident and still have TX property (Travis Co.), but now reside in KS. When I lived there before, I only needed the safety inspection/sticker to register my car. If I join Escapees and "move" to Livingston, would my 1988 MH need a smog check to register it there? I looked on the DPS web site and the smog check requirement depended on location. Did you need to get your MH smog checked when using Livingston as your domicile?
